Have any of you used or are using a Sonic Maximizer. I'm thinking of buying and hooking one up to my 5150 combo. Will this help with the sound?

I have one...I have the little BBE 262, they don't make them anymore. I didn't want the rack version, and I was able to get the old 2 series before they went away. Not much bigger than a stomp box. I like it, real cleans and beefs up the tone a lot and I am using a 5150. I have the stack though, not the combo.

I used to use a BBE Big Bottom and Sonic Maxemizer 362, and they were pretty good.
You nead the maximizer for those crappy 5150's.

Sure, a little lighter fluid and a match and they warm up just fine.

Well, I'm definitely NOT at the Pleasure Dome anymore, where you get CRUCIFIED for saying things like that.

Anyway, I'll go get the lighter fluid......

Man I'm beginning to think you two are 5150 stalkers!

Like it or not, it is what it is. I consider it kind of an anti Marshall. My main amp for a while now has either been a Marshall or an amp that was based on a Marshall. The 5150 is there when I want a non Marshall unique sound. Its like having a different color crayon in the box for me.

But hey lets light one up and see if the smoke scares all the bees out!

Well, like I've admitted to you before LarryJ, the 5150 is an absolute trip to play, and if I'd had the head version, instead of the 89 lb. combo sitting in my bedroom in college, I'd have thrown it in the closet and pulled it out once every couple of weeks or so.

It's actually a thrill to play, you're right. It's not my main flavor, though.

As funny as I think that is, I would think that a Sonic Maximizer would only bring out the worst aspects of the 5150. Am I wrong, Tribb?

</font>
I couldn't really tell you bud. I used it, along with the big bottom on a marshall head I had before I had one modded, and it sounded really good, but I was using distortion pedals at the time too.
When I used it on my 5150 head it sounded really crappy to my ears, and I couldn't use the big bottom cause that took all the presence away.
A 5150 is pretty temperamental when it comes to effects. They'd be better if Peavey would design one that has a variable effects loop so you can dial in the amount of signal that goes through the loop.
I used lexicon stuff in mine because you can adjust the effect itself for the amount of signal going through it.
I was always fiddling with it, trying to keep the gain and clean it up. It never worked, and I used a lot of different crap.
You might just be better off using an eq of some sort to try and tailor the sound, but it'll still sound buzzy, and there's no warmth to them.

Bro, I'm way ahead of you there, or at least jogging *with* you. I had a studio-quality effects rack piped through my 5150, and consequently sounded like poop for about half a year.

I had the Digitech TRS 24, and you couldn't even bypass the unit and still get the raw tone of the 5150 with that thing. I swore off digital effects at that point, although I'm confident that if I'd shelled out $2,400 for an Eventide that it might have worked out.

The effects themselves were beautiful. I had a triple detune going on, where one string would fire off at 28ms after the dry signal, only it was detuned a few cents, then a second signal would fire off at 56ms, and a third would fire off at like 65ms and a final one at 70 something.

The bottom line is that the effects loop quality of the 5150 sucks. Eddie doesn't even use it, except for a noise gate......or so I've heard.

If you don't have a True Bypass built into the amp, then you're flat-out stuck with the Bypass on the effects unit, which may or may NOT be identical to your dry tone. YMMV.

That's what I understand too. Ed takes the signal out of the power section of his amp and before putting it into his speakers, runs it into an attenuator of some sort which drops it back to line level.
Then he put's the line level signal through his effects and then powers the signal back up with an H&H power amp, so he doesn't use the effects loop in the 5150 at all. The 5150 being as hot as it is, I don't know why they even bothered installing an effects loop if they weren't going to make it variable. As to where he uses the noise gate I couldn't tell you that, but it makes more sense to use it in the output section rather than the 5150's effects loop.
The effects loop is bypassed in a sense anyway unless there's an effect in it cause it just connects the preamp to the power amp and if there's no effect it runs straight to the power amp from the preamp.
