he goes without saying.

For me

Mark Knophler, he kills me with his tone, and note choice, and the bubby doesn't even use a pick!

more to come...

Ooooooh, a tough one.

I'll throw Eric Johnson to the list-tone to die for, beautiful note choice, amazing chops, and the most mysterious aspect of his playing: his phrasing.
Don't bark at me...I didn't name ya.

Steve vai is just unbelievable, he does everything blues metal rock country world jazz he is a guitar god. My guitar god. I worship vai!!!!!!!!!!

Zakk wylde just kicks ass. I love his tone so simple jcm 800 sd-1 and chorus and kick asss music. His ozzy stuff and solo work truly are works of great guitar playing.
Bringing real guitar solos back to music-RIP rhoads and Srv-Rock on vai-Wylde-slash-and eddie!!!!!!!!!!
"I don't like to push the envelope, Id rather chuck grenades into it!" -Ted Nugent-

=PASSION AND WARFARE=
"That stevie vai, what a nice little boy!" -the audience is listening-

Chris Impellitteri - this dude plays so fast it's ridiculous and has a nice crunchy guitar sound. I don't know how he gets a strat to sound like that (stacked humbucker or not) but he does..

Mike McCready (Pearl Jam)- Great riffs, improvisation and speed. Pearl Jam recently released over 50 bootlegs and every one of them is worth buying because Mike does something different every time. He is a master of the wah, he uses it wisely during the verses and even better during his solos.
He also uses delay better than any other guitarist that I have ever heard.
He is very Hendrix inspired and it shows through his playing. And of course the tone is unlike anybody else these days.... maybe a little hendrixy (is that a word).

Stevie Ray Vaughn - When he is playing the guitar, every emotion and feeling in his body go straight to his fingers and out of the amplifier.

True UW, it's too bad SRV had to go so soon. He was so good. Never heard anyone better.

Ty Tabor - amazing original chops.
John Sykes - huge guitar, highly underated.
Eric Johnson - saw him on Toronto recently, astounding!
Gary Moore - Haven't heard anything from him in awhile, hope he get's back to rockin'
And a few others missing in action - Micheal Schenker, Brian May...

Here's a guy a few months ago I would never have known about until a friend turned me onto him....Steve Lukather. Initial reaction was, the guy from "Toto"???? Then I heard that "Live In Tokyo" CD with Larry Carlton (who's another guy I never knew about before and just kicks ass too!) Learned a thing ot two about Lukather and all the stuff he's played on as a session player, not to mention the EVH connection, and have discovered one truly underrated player. I even flipped when I found out he played the EVH-sounding jam on Cheech & Chong's Next Movie (when Chong goes in the music store and blows up a bunch of amps)
