Im looking into buying either a Wolfgang or a Wolfgang Special. Anyone out there who has a preference and reasons to back it up. I personally like the tone control but is there anything on the Wolfgang Special that makes it...special. Thanks for your input.

Just go for the real deal and get the Wolfgang! You only live once.

I have heard some guys say that the special is made of a different material then the standard. I am not sure of that, but my Wolfie's about 2 and a half years old and still sounds great.

I got a buddy that plays the Special for his "live" gigs and saves the standard.

If your going to get a special over a Standard make sure you get the Flametop Special. Just my opinion!

I strongly reccomend an original Wolfgang over a special. Go into a store and play both. In my opinion, there's a big difference. Obviously there is a big difference or else they wouldn't sell it for so much cheaper. The special just lacks the attention to detail. One significant difference to me is the neck. The special's neck is hardrock maple, while the original is birdseye maple. In my opinion the feel of the birdseye maple neck is what makes the original guitar so good. It's just feels so comfortable. The original also has an arched maple body top. Anyhow, good luck with your purchase...

I agree with steely. There's a big difference between the two beside the price. If you have a chance to try them both out, I'd do so, just so you'll feel you've made the right choice for yourself.

I just picked up another used vintage sunburst standard for 800, shipping included. A used speacial is around 5-600. I'd go with the standard for the extra few bucks. If you look around on ebay, and harmony central, there's lot's of good deals to be had. If you're looking for a new one, and I know some guys have phobias about playing used ones, you're going to pay a lot more. Good luck.

Aren't the specials the cheap ones? If they are, why would Ed use them? Tonaly speaking I could see it, but if he likes the tone of the cheap ones, and he plays the cheap ones, why doesn't he make a high end version of the special to fit his needs, and do away with the standard.
As far as I know, the specials aren't built very well, and they wouldn't stand up on the road so I don't get it?

    Hey Sherman Welcome Back!

I agree, cheaper is a bad word, less expensive is better. They hold up. They sound great. They're back to basics. The Standard is like the Caddilac version, lots of stuff that do not change the sound. Which is most important anyway, right?

Sherman, Ed uses standard necks on his specials, cause I hear he likes the 10 degree tiltback, and bird's eye maple. When he first started pushing the Wolfs he mentioned that he loved the tiltback of the neck. The specials have no tiltback, and he's always advocated maple tops. I wonder if his specials are outfitted with maple tops. Ed's specials are also modified with diff. pickups that aren't avail. to the public as standard production.

    Really Tribb?
What's the point of selling guitars with your name on it if you don't even play them! Man that pisses me off I could see a guitar with pezio p/u's or the Trans Trem, but I always thought the idea was to make a guitar that was exactly like his main axe. I means tastes may change but when I was looking for a EVHMM, outside of the fact that they were great guitars, I wanted Ed's guitar, you know the one he plays, not some marketed product with his name on it

I play a special and I love it! Anything that's good enough for Ed is good enough for me. Hardly a "cheap" guitar by any means.
