i got a marshall extension cab with 2 speakers. i tried to use it with my 60 watt combo but the sound was really weak. the extension jack says 4 ohms. i think the extension speakers are 16 ohm. do i need to get 8 ohm speakers then use the little jumper wire between them? or do i need 2 4 ohm speakers? im confused here.

You can't get a 4 ohm load with two 16 ohm speakers. You can only obtain 8 ohms when they are wired in parallel, or 32 ohms if they are wired in series.

The easiest way to achieve what you want is to get two 8 ohm speakers and wire them in parallel. Basically you will wire the the positives of each speaker to each other, and the negatives to each other. Then you will run a positive and negative wire to your jack.

You can't achieve 4 ohms with two 4 ohm speakers either. With that combination you can have either 2 ohms in paralles or 8 ohms in series.

    Hope that helps.

Rick, check your extension cab. If there's a plate on the back that says 16 ohms, then you have have two 8 ohm speakers that are wired in series. That means the positive of one speaker is wired to the negative of the other speaker like a humbucker pickup.
Open the back of the cab and look at the speakers themselves. There should be a sticker or stamp either on the back of the speaker or one of the metal sides telling you how many ohms each speaker is.
If they're 8 ohm speakers then do as BrownSound1 says and wire them in parralel by taking the wires off the output jack, attaching the + wires together and the - wires together, or the same color wires together if you're not sure which is the + and -.
But before you take them off the output jack make sure to take note of which wire is pos. and which is neg. on the output jack so you can match them back up the same way.
Your cab will then be a 4 ohm cab, assuming they were 8 ohm speakers.
You also have to make sure that your combo is set up to take an extension cab and regular speaker at the same time.
On quite a no. of combos you have to unplug the regular speaker if you're going to run an extension cab, or it mismatches the load, especially if your main speaker is 8 ohms, and can cause damage to the combo.
You can run it with the ext. cab or the regular speaker but not both on those systems, while others let you run both.
Make sure you find out how your combo is set up.

Rick, what I'm gathering by that is that your extension cab needs to be an 8 ohm as well. What basically happens is you are putting the main and extension in parallel when you run both, and if they are both 8 ohm cabs then the amp will see 4 ohms when both are hooked up. If that's the case then you have to have either two 16's or two 4's in your cab to make it work.
