Does anyone know what kind of wood the body of Eddie's 5150 Kramer was made from?

From what I understand Ed didn't start using basswood till he signed with EBMM, and his (stage) guitars up till that point all had swamp ash bodies.

Eddie had a Seymour Duncan '59 in there too. Was that custom wound, or is it just a regular '59 model that you can buy at Musicians Friend? I'm thinking about the '59 model or the Custom Custom to put in a 5150 Kramer replica.

Rick's right. Although Ed was working with S.D. they never got a product that Ed was happy with, or reached an agreement and Ed decided not to work with him on that pickup. Afterward Ed was surprised to find that S.D. had put out a pickup called the Van Halen. When Ed found out he got angry and phoned S.D. demanding that the pickup be pulled as he didn't want his name associated with it. The name was changed to the Custom Custom. As far as I know it's the S.D. version of Ed's pickup, but from what I understand Ed never approved it for sound. I've tried them and they don't really nail Ed's early sound. S.D. does make some excellent pickups and there are others that come closer.

What body wood do you have, is your neck rosewood or maple, and what kind of amp are you using?

That guitar issue of the Inside Magazine says that his 5150 had a SD '59 in it. I was thinking that Eddie had the Custom Custom in his Franky during it's last year or two of use ('82, '83). Not sure though. But it says Brad Starks wrote that little guitar issue so he should know.

bcgvh, I have that issue, and while I don't want to knock down Brad, I know that Ed's always favoured higher output pickups, and the custom custom has medium highs and lows and a high mid, and outputs at about 14k or higher. The 59 has a low mid and more highs and lows, and ohms out at about 8k.
That's why I believe S.D. used the custom custom as the VH pickup. It's much closer to the original EBMM EVH and Peavey pickups in resistance and tone output as well.
When Ed removed his original paf from his es-335 he rewound it to be hotter. Those old original paf's sit between 6.5-8.5, and Ed wanted it considerably hotter than that so he upped the resistance by increasing the windings.
The custom custom sounds a bit more distorted than the 59 because of it's considerably higher output and higher mids, but has more bite as well.
I've heard stories as well about Ed using a S.D. 59, but techs I've spoken to and a friend who knows the band and has one of Ed's old backup 5150 kramers(not Sherman, Seenbad) with the pickups removed has told me that he was still experimenting then and didn't use 59's. At least not right off the rack, so to speak.
I think Ed's really the only one who can answer that question completely, but since he used a no. of diff. 5150's he probably used different pickups as well, but I imagine it would have been a hotter pickup than the 59.

Rick, since your guitar has a basswood body. and maple neck, which is very much more porous than the swamp ash bodys that were used earlier on, you might want to try the custom custom for a higher output if you're doing VH type of music.
If you want a good all round sound try a Seth Lover pickup. I use them and they sound like an old humbucker, but have lots of harmonics and squeal when you need it. They do cost more though because of the way they're made, exactly like an old paf pat. applied for pickup. Then again, the guitar I'm using now is a composite of different woods and the S.L. sounds great in that.
A 59 might even be something you want to try, but a custom custom will give you more of a Carnal Knowledge/Balance kind of sound with a basswood body.
If your guitar had a swamp ash body you'd have more variety to choose from, but basswood is not a great tone wood, and I know I'll get shit for that, but that's what I believe from trying a no. of different basswood bodies.
It's hard to choose, and that's why I've gone through so many pickups before deciding on the Seth Lovers. Evey one's ear is so different that it's next to impossible to decide what someone else will like.
I probably haven't helped you much Rick, sorry, but that kind of discussion is probably best done over the phone, cause there's so many other things involved that there's no room for here.
I'll shut up now..
