First, I'd recommend you check out this link:

http://reranch.com/

Specifically, read "Reranch 101". Also, you'll find a message board on the site too, and there are many very helpful and nice people there who are glad to answer questions.

Two things come to mind from personal experience. First, stripping a poly finish is a freaking nightmare. About the only thing that works is a product called "Aircraft Remover". It's available at Wal-Mart. Read the Reranch 101, and pay note to the garbage bag trick, which really works.

Now, the second thing that comes to mind is, if you're going to refinish in a solid color, it rarely makes sense to strip the body at all. Sanding, filling and priming are a better option, IMHO.

Hope that gives you some ideas. Good luck.

Thanks for the information
EVH: Definitely. Playing guitar was my sanctuary. It was the one place I could go to if I got fucked around by a girlfriend, or anyone else, for that matter. It still is. If thereís something I canít deal with, I can just spend hours playing. Itís a God-given gift Ė I certainly donít know where the ideas come from. Theyíre obviously given to you, and you have to keep your fingers moving and your mind quiet. I try my best to not think about thinking, so I can just let it flow. Because when I start thinking, forget it. <br />So....why he isn't playing guitar ? ? ?

Surely! (Now stop calling me Shirley.)

That Reranch site has tons of info on it, but it does stress nitrocellulose finishes, which tend to be used more on vintage guitars. Great debate rages as to whether or not "nitro" actually makes a guitar sound better.

Another really good resource is a book by Dan Erlewine on refinishing guitars, and it's available at www.stewmac.com.

My advice would be to find your best combination of ease of application, cost, and quality of final result.

Good luck fellas!
