Howdy,

Please explain how to do high-pitched whammy bar dives like Eddie does during Panama, Dreams, Why Can't This Be Love etc...

Also, how do you do the elephant and horse dives?

Thanks,
Dan

Howdy yerself...
Ping a harmonic on the B strang 2nd fret, its a bit of a bugger to get first time! And then waggle yer twang stik like a fury Thats the horsey one
The elephant is a bit more tricky.Turn yer guitar volume off, depress yer twang stik slightly,
Ping harmonics on the 5th fret D, 7th fret G & 12th fret B strings in quick succession, turn yer guitar volume back up & release yer carrying handle !! And hey presto, who let dumbo in.. I'm pretty sure thats right...Hell just try it You can come up with all sorts of weird stuf

I'm not sure what high pitched scream your talking about in "Panama" but there is a dive halfway thru the opening riff.. it is actually a pulloff on the G and B strings. But you pull off in a downward motion towards the body of the guitar then depress the bar. The Horsey scream is not a pinged harmonic or chimed it is a "pinch" harmonic on the G string 2nd fret. It takes a while to get the feel but really "dig in" with your pinch. Sometimes it helps to scrape the A and D strings with the pick hand to get a better "bite" before striking the G. Another cool dive is to hit a pinged or chimed harmonic on the G string at the 5th fret then depressing and returning the bar. You can use this one on ANY chimed or pinged harmonic.
Watch "Live Without a Net" and you will see a lot of Eddies whammy bar dive antics.

Hey Ya'll,

Thanks for all the info. I've got the technique down, but am far from being able to execute it while playing a song.

I guess it takes, practice, practice, practice...

Not meaning to be a know it all, but the elephant sound described by Kamikazesheep is correct except for the strings that you execute the harmonics with. Hit the "G" string on the 5th fret, then the "B" string on the 7th fret, and then last, hit the high "E" string on the 12th fret. In that order. It is a very cool technique. Good Luck!
