well I asked this question the other way around but his is a $3000 Eventide Harmonizer.
He plays in stereo one side dry one side with effects, he uses the Harmoizer to detune the wet side a cent or 2 and then put a predelay on it so combined with the dry side it gives him that really good chorus sound.

Now I have recently discovered you don't need a harmonizer to do that, I have a Digitech GNX3 that has stereo detuning and it was $499 new plaus it has a billion other things it can do including a built in digital 8 track recorder, I also recently bought a little know processor called the Oberheim Gm 1000 it has what's called shift delay and that does the same thing, I got it used for under $300 including the footpedal and it's rock solid, one of the best built units I have *ever* held the thing is a workhorse tank.
hope this helps

Check out the TC Electronic G-Major . It does the Ed thing pretty good. I have some sound clips of me hacking out a few VH riffs with one and everyone I've played them for seem to think so as well.

I own a Marshall Supervibe, and a Rocktron Tsunami, which are both used for different applications.

And yes, Ed using a VERY high quality chorus from the Eventide.

I also have a rack unit that is "studio quality", but I prefer analog tones, unless you're talking about a $3000+ unit like Ed's.

The cool thing about the Tsunami is that it has an Ambience mode, which allows for a simple "doubling" of the guitar, with an adjustable delay up to 32ms. Think of the tone on 'Panama'. You don't really hear any "blurry" chorusing, but there's definitely some "thickening" going on.

It's actually SO good at that particular trick, that in my opinion, it doesn't sound suitable BEFORE an amp's input. That sucks, because I don't have an amp w/ an effects loop right now.

analog man

Check it out, there's some cool sound samples and you can check out what guys like Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Billy Gibbons, Eric Johnson & Scott Henderson have to say about it.

I'm ordering mine next week!
