I am a new guitarist and have just started looking at Wolfgangs.

What is the deal with the Wolfgang Special, solid purple? Is this a Korean Wolfie that I have read about on these boards? The one that I am looking at has the stamped signtaure and has a serial number that begins with a "9".

These seem to be seeling for much less than the other solid color Wolfgangs, like black or ivory.

I guess my question is what is the difference betweens a "Special" and a "Standard"?

    Thanks for the help!

I'm no expert, but I think the main differences between Wolfs and Wolf Specials are the neck (birdseye maple vs. maple), body (basswood with arched maple top vs. basswood flat top), knobs (volume & tone vs. volume only) and some different finishes. And no the purple Special is not made in Korea. Someone correct me if I'm wrong (I'm sure you will ).

    You mean this one right?

It probably sells for less because it's kind of ugly (IMO). The purple flame top is much cooler.

Yes, that is the one that I mean.

If I were to buy a solid purple Wolfgang Special, then I would probably stripe it like one of the old Kramers, just to make it different.

So, the "Special" is still a good guitar right?

Sure, it's good. Some guys like Specials better than Standards. In fact, I think Eddie played mostly Specials on stage during the III tour - I know the Frankenwolf was a Special.

Just a note, the Standard also has a tilted headstock. I don't think the Special does.

The Special is a fine guitar.

Both pictures above are of US made wolfs.
All the Korean specials I've seen are quilt tops, so if it's solid coloured or a flame top you can be pretty sure, at this point anyway, that it's a US model.

Wolf Special are way cooler! They are a little more simple in looks and design. Closer to Ed's old axes! I like the way they sound better than the standards! Consider a used one even!

I would definitely check out the Special...I have Standards, Flame Top specials, and specials.

I actually prefer the specials overall, they're very punchy, and I feel more comfortable to play.

Besides, the price can't be beat!
I've talked the store guys down to 700.00 on a brand-new special...they hate me!

    You bastard.
I hope it was a US special.
I've always preferred the feel of the standards, but I know a couple of guys that use specials profesionally and they're quite happy with them.

I have two of the Kor's specials and I haven't seen one in purple yet. I do have the USA purple Wolfie. It's a solid color as pictured in the other post. The Kor's so far have the transparent tops to them. My purple one is special to me! I got it just after my surgery to reconnect a severed nerve in my left index finger! You can bet I play that thing with stiches in my hand!!!!

    </font>[/QUOTE]Oh, yes, most definitely.
I've played the Korean ones, and I feel that they are a great beginner/intermediate level guitar(even if they are a bit pricey for that range), and overall they ARE nice...but once ya go U.S. It's tough to go otherwise!

So far the Korean Special ONLY comes in amber, red, blue, maroon, or sunburst, all with quilt tops. Any other Wolfgang you see is a USA model. The serial number beginning with 9, and the signature stamp would also only be on a USA Wolf.

The "Frankenwolf" was a special. Peavey only made two of them. Ed has one, and the other hangs in a display area over at Hartley Peavey's office. I used to check it out sometimes and take it to gigs as a joke, but I always felt weird taking it. If anything had happened to it, it would have been my ass probably...
    Off the subject but...
Peavey has tried several times to get Ed to let them do a striped Wolf, but he won't have it. There was talk about a year or so ago of doing a limited run, and getting Ed's signature on them. So far it's not happening.

Well as the owner of one of them 'ugly' Purple Specials, I can't recommend the USA Special enough. I play my 'ugly' Special 90% of the time.
I only pick up the Green FT Standard I have when I feel guilty over having such a nice looking guitar that I don't play.

At first I didn't care for the Gloss Purple that much either, but over time I've grown to really like it. Much better than the plain boring Black or Ivory. A ton better looking than the plain top Sunburst Special. I like the Gold though. However, who really cares what color it is? It's how it plays and sounds that's important.
