Well, I hope i don't sound too naive, but, here goes... I have been seriously considering taking up the guitar (lessons, etc..), but, I have a few questions that I would like to get some unbiased opinions (from this site) rather than the guy at my local music shop (working on commission does weird things to people, no offense to any sales people)... let me say that I am a HUGE Van Halen fan and that one of the first guitars to catch my eye was the Wolfgang... so, with that said, here are my questions:
    1. Is the Wolfgang (special or standard) the best buy for the price?
    2. Would anyone suggest a different guitar for a new guitarist (money isn't a HUGE factor, but, I have to be reasonable)?
    3. Any other suggestions for equipment??

Oh, and of course, ANY other advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

    TIA!!!!

Nice name Dude! (I ain't droppin my tag!)

The Wolfies are apparently great, but for a newbie, I wouldn't suggest shelling out more then $500 on something that may or may not happen, (you playing guitar!)

Buy something that feels comfy on the hands, (good action/ neck radious/ pick-up config that you like), a cheap amp, (that gets a decent tone), and go for it. Just don't spent too much money

I agree with homeunit. Don't spend any more than $500, including the amplifier. Just find something small that sounds good. If after a few months you decide you enjoy playing and want to stick with it, then upgrade your gear.

Yeah, over at www.musicyo.com you can get Kramers like Ed used to play. They are like 150 to 200 bucks and an amp somewhere cheap...Marshall makes a nice little practice amp that hooks on a belt unless you want the Pignose haha! classic! But you probably want to play a guitar before buying it to see how it feels.

You can get a decent new Ibanez or Jackson for probably $250 bones, if you're looking to play VH-type of stuff. If you want a Floyd Rose on it, they're probably $325 or so. Or you could look in the paper for a used "real" Kramer or even a cheaper Charvel, all of those will work.

Amp wise - Hmmm....god I haven't really bought a practice amp in so long, but Crate makes a decent little amp (their stacks are awful), you can probably get a Valvestate Marshall amp for $250 or $300, or of course even some of the small Fender models are good for beginners.

I remember my first electric guitar setup, an Epiphone Les Paul and a little 15 watt Fender Squire amp. Ahh....sweet memories.

IMO (and probably biased because i don't have a wolfgang), if money was not a HUGE factor, I'd get the wolfgang. First I think its BS a begginner has to suffer on a cheap guitar. If you can afford a better one go for it because a good guitar will make you want to play more. Second if you are a VH fan, what could be better memoribilia than his guitar? Third if you finally decide guitar isn't for you, the wolfgang has a much better resale value than a jackson or ibanez. So I would get the wolfgang, its guaranteed to be a great guitar!

I remember asking the same question a couple of months ago, and went cheap.. Im still going now after 2 months so I guess thats something, but im glad I didnt spend a heap. After 2 months I can play about 4 or 5 chords and can kinda do something that resembles the riff from 'satisfaction'... wild progress here..lolol.. but im having fun, thats the whole point of it

You're going about it the right way Goo.
When you do decide you're ready for a better model, it'll be sweeter cause you'll be able to appreciate the feel of a good neck, having played for awhile.
    More power to ya bud!!
