Hi guys. Im in a pickle. I was going to get a dreamcast for christams ....but i was thinking wait a minute i dont need to be playing fuckin games all day...i should be playing guitar. I recently bought some new music living colour, alice in chains. boston, some satriani and vai . So that really inspired me. Well i need an amp that delivers the sounds i was thinking about some under 500.00 for a head. Would the 5150 deliver the sound i need for those bands? Will a 5150 work with a combo amp if i connect them? Please help!!!!!!! Also there are a few on ebay are they any good?????

Don't get a 5150 unless you are playing in a band. I really recommend that you get a POD by Line 6. They give you tons of incredible tones at bedroom levels. It's really amazing. I play professionally, and the POD gives me all the tones I could ever want right at my fingertips. Mind you, I wouldn't use it live, but for recording, and practicing at home through a stereo or headphone, it's the shit! You could also get a Line 6 combo amp. For practicing and jamming to CDs and stuff, they really can't be beat.

I hear ya Jape. How they get all those amps into that little oddly shapped, red thing I'll never understand.

As far as Ebay is concerned, you don't want a tube amp delivered through the mail or via an airplane. Everthing gets loosened up inside the amp. Especially tubes bro. So if your gonna get a tube go through a local dealer n' shit. That way it's under warranty.

Another alternative to the POD is a Digitech RP2000. I originally was going to get a POD, but found one of these puppies for even cheaper. It's similar to the POD as far as amp modeling and effects and it doubles as a pedalboard live as you can set it up that way. There's a built-in expression pedal that can also be setup for controlling the wah and other functions. There's also a tuner, drum patterns to play along with, and I can plug my CD player into it to play along with songs. The digital recorder also lets me record parts to help me learn guitar parts. The only thing I haven't tried is the "Talker" function. (Think Frampton's voice box thing) All the reviews I've read have outstanding marks for it, but the POD seems to be a lot more popular. These are going on ebay right now for around $300, which is about $150 cheaper than the list price. BTW, I haven't gigged with it yet, but definitely will be using it next time I do.

You can use a pod in live situations...but that's just not what it was designed for. First off switching from channels or amps on it would be hard since there isn't a foot pedal that comes with it...you'd have to do it with your hands. And playing through an amp might alter the PODs sounds a little. It was more designed for use with headphones and direct recording. I believe Line 6 makes combo amp versions that have the PODs technology in them...those are meant for live situations. I've seen them around a bit, but never tried one myself...maybe check it out.

The footpedal is available as an option for the PODs, and if you check their website, they have some stomp boxes to work along with it.
