The stack wins everytime for me, 'till you go to move the darn things! Even if the combo sounds exactly the same, it still doesn't LOOK as cool as the stack. Of course for practising, the little stuff is better.

Depends on what you're looking for I guess. For instance I can't think of a better sounding amp for clean playing than a Fender Twin, which is a combo. Now for playing "big rock" you gotta have a stack. Nothing sounds better than a closed back 4x12 getting pushed by 100 watts of tube fury.

I've always found you can't beat a 4/12. Maybe it's all in my head or maybe it's because I've used them forever, but they seem warmer more responsive and just plain better then any combo, for the dirt and lead tones.

For clean, clean, (IMO), you can't beat a twin or a jc120

Sorry Brett, but I've gotta agree with BS1, and homeunit. I used a 5150 head through a 4x12 marshall cab. which sounded fine at the time, then went to a 5150 combo, cause it was easier to move around, but now I'm using a marshall halfstack cause you can't beat the sound of that cabinet. I tried my marshall head through a 2/12 open backed cabinet for a bit, but that 4/12 hits like a brick. The 5150 combo is a power house too, no doubt about it, but it just doesn't sound like a closed back 4x12. No sound like it.

I forgot to mention, when you trip over your chord like I've done and go flying into the front of your cabinet, the 4x12 front makes a much better cushion that the combo.

I usually just trip over the drum riser or our singer's pedal board. Of course there was the time some 500 pound mosher dude tripped over my cord and took a header into my cab, that was nice. That damn Marshall cab withstood it.

Personally, I think stacks are a pain in ass. Especially if you play a lot and you're practice place is not at home.

Seriously though, my advice is to buddy up with whoever is running the soundboard that night.

Either way, you'll spend the rest of your life seaching for the ultimate sound from an amp, (which is not always a bad thing)because there are so many variables.

The room, the guitar, the pick ups, the band, and on and on....
