I keep breaking the 2nd (B) string on my Floyd equipped Ibanez. All gear snobs feel free to flame me at will now It only happens with the D'Addario strings I normally use. I was re-stringing today after it broke and the new one snapped when I was bringing it up to pitch. I only change 1 at a time and it isn't breaking at the tuning peg or the vise in the bridge. It seems like that particular string is too brittle or something. Any ideas???? It normally snaps about 3/4" from the bridge where it doesn't even touch anything.

You might check and see if you have a burr developed in the bridge saddle, but it seems like that's where it would break if that were the case.

There's no burr in the saddle & no kinks in the string. I'm pretty meticulous about that sort of thing. It doesn't snap at the saddle either. I don't know if I should scratch my watch or wind my but over this one.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Change string brand. Change the gauge. Try a set from another store (maybe a bad batch from the factory) If there are no burrs in the saddle, and there is no obvious reason why the string is breaking, your problem should be resolved from one of the above. I would be willing to bet you got a bad batch of strings. It happens occasionally...

I was thinking it is a bad batch too. It seems to be rampant in the 6-pack of strings I got from Musician's Friend.

I've been using GHS for almost twenty years now, and have never had problems with breakage myself. Maybe it's just luck, but I've never changed brands since and don't plan to.

Try Dr. Music strings! YES, they are more expensive, but these babys are simply the Cadillac of strings! I have yet to blow a string, and I bend the SHIT out of my strings. (I stopped using Floyds or ANY trems years ago because I can get all the effect I need from my own fingers). Also, they really hold their tone forever! I used to change strings once a week like clockwork, now I can go 2-3 weeks without needing to. However, If I where giging as a guitarist (I play bass in my current band) then I would still change them more regularly.

I use Ernie Ball RPS myself (Reinforced Plain Strings) just becuase I have been using them for about 7 years. I never had a problem with them, but I have seen occasional problems with other strings, especially at the ball end. I dunno... but spend the five bucks for a new set, and post your results here. Kind of curious now...

If your rippin on em alot it's gonna help...

Even if you get an occasional attack with an odd pick angle or excessive force, that fucker is gonna blow...that's just life.

But suffice to say, it sounds like your axe could use a setup. Is that Ibanez equipped with a Floater or a blocked Floyd?

The other guitarist in my old band had this problem on two of his guitars. His Fender Telecaster had a nasty habit of detinating his B string and his Gibson 330 had a similar problem with the G. He took them in and had the frets filed and that did the trick.

I use Ernie Ball Super Slinkies, and I have for 20 years.

It's a floater. It's only a couple years old & I don't play a whole lot, and am not really that aggressive with pick attack etc. and very rarely pull the bar sharp. I am an engineer by trade & get paid to figure stuff out that doesn't make sense. I am baffled.

So who gets paid to figure this one out???
Not sure yet, but apparently not me. I hate not being able to figure simple stuff like this out. Next time I re-string I'm gonna try a different brand. I'm hesitant to switch brands though because when I have tried diff. brands in the past it always seems to throw off intonation even if they are the same gage. That may not be a big deal to you guys but there's nowhere near here that understands how to set-up a floyd. I've done it on other guitars but they never seemed quite right. This one was just the way I like it right out of the box & I'd REALLY hate to screw it up. More than likely it's just a bad batch of strings and I'm fretting(no pun intended) over nothing. I'm gonna give it ANOTHER thorough going over next time just to make doubly sure I didn't miss anything.

BTW, does anyone know if a real floyd will bolt right on in place of the cast Ibanez unit?
