ok, being the poor teenager that i am,i bought this guitar off a kid at school. its a cort(some cheap sears thing). it has a plywood body, with a plastic top, ummm, 2 humbukers(i took the neck one out),a volume control that barely works, and it had a tone knob, but i took it out also. how can i improve it relatively cheaply? any suggestions are welcomed...and buy a new one or throw it out are not good suggestions

    Plastic top? Plywood body? eeeeeasch.

It's kinda hard to say what's going on with it without looking at it. Ya know? Take it to a local music shop with somebody you know that shops their a lot, (and the clerks like).

If the body and neck are tight with each other, in decent shape (frets too), then you've got something to work with on your budget. Otherwise it might just be the junk you decribe.

You probably could salvage the pick ups and tuning pegs though. Ya never know when you could use them down the road.

    Good Luck!

MikeKramer Is pretty much right. Mark if you want to fix it up, parts aren't cheap. Most replacement pickups (for a set) will run you well over $100. If you change the pickgaurd it's about another $20-35. If you want to repaint it, it's gonna cost a forune. A $70 Kramer from Music Yo kicks some major ass...

As the saying goes, "You can't polish a turd." If you can't afford a new axe, that's what part time jobs are for my friend - financing rock and roll dreams! I started out with a Les Paul copy and piece of crap amp from a J.C. Penney catalog. It's been a few years, but I'm now playing a Wolfgang Special, Strat w/ EMG's, and a hot Charvel through a rack full of goodies into a '74 Marshall with original Celestion greenbacks in it. Always keep your ears open for people selling things privately - that's where the great finds usually come from.

New pickups, re-wire the guitar and get the intonation checked and if that doesn't work... save your cash and get a new guitar.

Also owns a cheap Cort...but it's a cheap Cort signed by Dimebag Darrel. It would cost you more money to try to improve it than to just buy a good guitar. Unless you absolutely love that axe (sounds like you don't), save your money.
