    Alright fellas,

Already have a Wolf Special that I love, although I wish it were a little higher quality. I keep getting this annoying overtone on the low E (Almost sounds like intonation problem, but it's great at 12th fret) and I'd really like to get a second electric for Drop-D, etc...

So I'm thinking since Dream Theater ROCKS! and Petrucci is a hardcore riffman, that he ought to know what he likes in a guitar and together with EB it should be a very good quality electric. Anyone here had the opportunity to play with one? Musician's Friend has them for $1319 - $1599 and I'm thinking of grabbing one. I question the integrity of the bolt-on neck. Anyway, I'd appreciate your opinions. I'd consider waiting for a 5150, or Franky from Rols, but not sure if he offers credit purchases. Also I want the higher quality guitar, not just the one that is cool because it is Eddie's or John's.

I never thought I'd hear another Dave and Eddie album again. If I did, I thought it would be a mid-paced affair like the Rolling Stones or later day AC/DC. After the TATTOO single I was ready for a poppy album from old guys, with a few nods to harder rock (She's A Woman and Bullethead) and I would have been happy with that.

    So....

What do you guys think? Is this a good deal, does it look like it is $1320 for a reason? A MM Axis is about the same price at Musician's Friend as well. Are they selling them as new when they are really used? Is it because they have blemishes? Factory Defect models? Or are they a pretty reputable place to buy from?

Well it's a basswood body, so if it were me, I'd stop there.

MM seems to put out a pretty high quality instrument, every one I play is 10x better then any other off the rack instrument.

My advice is to play it, if you like it, try something else, then something else, then something else, then if you still come back to the instrument and love it, you have a winner.

Cool! The wife approved my purchase of a Petrucci 6-string, so I may just go ahead and order it. Then once I get it, I may see if Ed can install the Buss Feiten system on my wolfie while I have the Petrucci at home to jam on. Then once I get the wolf back, I could send him the Petrucci and have him put the Buzz Feiten system on it.

That is assuming that the Buzz Feiten system will work on either/both of them.

I have an EBMM axis, so I can definitely tell you that EBMM's quality is second to none.

However, be warned...that Petrucci guitar is fairly different than the rest of the EMBB stable. The majority of the EBMM axes are 1 5/8 nut, fat neck guitars.

However, the petrucci axe is a 1 11/16 nut guitar with a very, VERY thin neck. It plays like an Ibanez...

If you're into that, go for it. I've played the EBMM Petrucci's and they're fine instruments. However, if you're into thicker necks like me, you might want to consider something else.

Just to throw my two cents in, don't be swayed by any guitar that has a bolt on neck as opposed to a set neck. Over the years I've always heard that set neck sustain better, which I've found to be absolute rubbish. I've used bolt on necks that sustain far better than set necks I've tried.
There are too many material factors that control sustain and tone, including the amp you use, and I've just never found a set neck to be one of them. It might be more pleasing to the eye to play a set neck, or if you're a Les Paul collector you might want one with a set neck, but as far as quality and sound go I don't believe it makes one bit of difference. It's also nice to be able to remove a neck for repair, replacement, or modification if need be.

Glad you like your axe dog! I love to hear when someone is happy with a guitar purchase when the $$ start getting up there. I hope you enjoy it to bits, (not literally ).

Just thought I would let you guys know that I did get the Petrucci. Found a little place in Lawrence, Kansas that had one in stock, so I didn't have to order one and deal with all the associated repercussions of doing so.

I gotta say... "I LOVE THIS AXE!"

The neck is definitely thinner than my wolfie, but is it easily stronger. It is also wider. I was glad about that, because I have big, fat fingers and I need the strings to be slightly farther apart for extra room.

It had the Mystic Dream paint job that I was wanting, but no piezo pickup in the bridge and no custom fretboard inlays. I am thinking about contacting Ernie Ball and seeing if there is someone here in town that is qualified to install the Piezo in the bridge and set it all up for me.

I also like the fact that it has a full 24 fret neck. The wolfie only has a "usable" 22 fret neck. The geniuses over at Peavey (I guess I shouldn't leave EVH off the hook either) decided to notch the neck and fretboard for the truss rod adjuster. Ernie Ball however, made a small extra cut in the body to accomodate the adjuster and left the neck fretboard alone. I like this approach much better.

All in all it is a sweet guitar. String through body with full tremolo system, and no need to worry about unlocking the nut for alternate tunings, etc. I can't believe how great the intonation is and how well it stays in tune without having a locking nut.
