I had one in my swamp ash guitar. It made my guitar sound exactly the tone on VH1. Not what I was after, but great non the less.

I was thinking of thowing one of these in the Warmoth that I'm building. I have a few questions...

Is it really worth the $160 price tag?

You think it would sound as good in a three piece Alder, quilted maple drop top body with a birdseye/birdseye neck?

How long from the time you place the order until the pickup shows up at your door?

Any help would be appreciated.

I've always felt the VH1 tones were too treble-ey at some points. Was that your beef with it, Homeunit?

Eruption and "You Really Got Me" are 2 tones that I'd simply never want from my guitar.

Anyway, how did the tone differ from the Wolf/EBMM's pickups?

Volume-wise, and also tone-wise?

I'll be receiving one tommorrow, and will have it installed by thursday. I'll let you know my first impressions soon after. I'm replacing the bridge on my Wolfie with it.

Blasphemy!!!!

Admittedly, my favorite sound is the fair warning tone, but any guitar tone off those DLR albums is smoking!

The sound it gets will be largely determined by the type of body wood it's in.
It doesn't matter whether it's on a p/u ring, a pickguard, or fastened to the body.

I can't believe someone would charge $160.00 for a pickup + shipping and handling! Why is it so much? is there really $80.00 worth of extra copper in it? How does it differ craftsmanshipwise from their other pickups? I think they put the worm out there and a few fish a biting it.

It sounds very very much like a Seth Lover pickup.
Is it worth 160? No.

Tribb would you say its similar enough to a Seth Lover that a Seth Lover would work for me since I don't really want to dead on nail the old Eddie tone but want a pickup in that ballpark of harmonics and output.

Hmm, the thing that I noticed straight away was the scooped mids...nice mids but VHed. It really sounds like an old VH p/u. The overall tone was quite balanced, not quite enough bottom for me, but that's swamp ash.

Compared to the EBMM p/u's the EVH is lower output, quiter, and rawer sounding. It sounds like a VHed PAF.

I replaced my Seth for the EVH in my Swamp Ash guitar. The Seth works like a hot damned with the right wood combo. With my Ash body it didn't do what I wanted it to. I have an old modded Marshall with tons of gain and I found with the Seth in the ash body I still didn't have enough gain and bottom. I ended up dumping a Custom Custom in it and it works great.

I think it's all about matching your wood with the right p/u for the tone you're after. Swamp Ash isn't a particularly bottom heavy tone wood, it's more bright and midy and that's what the Seth gave me. With the Custom Custom, it has a larger bass response and higher output then the Seth and for me it's the perfect p/u for that guitar, and you can ask Tribb, I tried more than a few, lol.

My main guitar is a mahogany blend and I have two Seths in it and it's perfect. It's super ballsy, has an organic wood tone and I litteraly run my head with half the gain I used to with the swamp ash guitar. The mids and highs are perfectly balanced. It sustains forever. When you roll back your volume knob you can get some pretty clean tones even in your gain channel.

Seths really transmit the tone of your wood. If the wood resonates and sounds great on its own, the Seth will transmit that tone to your amp. You have to have a general idea of what the tonal characteristics are of your body wood first and then go from there. At least that's what I've found.

To each his own, but man... there's one phrase you'll never hear me utter! Dude, the opening strains of "You Really Got Me" are THE mystical "brown sound" and the tone that shook up the world! Still, like I said; to each his own...

I disagree completely.

I consider the tone on the intro to YRGM to be harsh and overly abrasive. To me, it's not brown, not at all. It's a unique tone, and like any other extreme tone, it'd be neat to play with for a tune or two, but it's not how I want my guitar/amp to sound most of the time. Like you said, to each his own.

The only similarities I hear between the first album and the rest of the Dave Era is the Marshall with the power amp distortion, albeit he's got more pre-amp gain going on VH1 and to a lesser extent Fair Warning.

I think if Eddie really liked that tone, he'd have used it on more than only a handful of songs. It's not the same tone that you hear on a track like "Little Dreamer", which I really like.

Of course he used a different guitar for that track, so who knows.

I also like the tone on 'Feel Your Love Tonight', and "Jamie's Cryin". Whether he backed off the gain, or switched guitars again, or both is beyond me, but I like the tone there a little better.

Changing the subject slightly, hey HomeUnit, how do you compare the tones between the Custom Custom and the 78' (EVH)???
