This may seem like a stupid question or something but is the 5150 II combo any good ? ... i ask because i always thought they were really expensive .. but here in aus they've dropped HEAPS in price i saw one for just under 3 grand australian for the cab and the head and just wondering if they haven't been too popular or something which is why they've dropped so much ?

    I have a 5150 head and I'm considering buying a 5150 II.

I have two questions I'm hoping someone can help me with:

First, is the tone, gain, and overall sound the same or is there a difference?

Second, how much are they going for in the used market i.e., how much can I expect to spend if I buy one used in good to great condition?

    Thanks for your help.

Check Ebay for the 5150 with the block EVH lettering...not the signature. Apparently it has much better tone. If I had the choice between the two I'd go for the 5150, its about 400-500 bucks (ebay). All they did on the 5150II is make an actual clean channel and fix some odds and ends here and there. Throw some JJ tubes in the 5150 and you've still got yourself a great EVH amp..for half the price of the new mark 2's. Point is, stick with what ya got.

The block letter vs. sig 5150 thing is completely untrue. The whole reason for that debate was because the block letter's shipped out with better tubes. I know I've been through 4 5150's: 2 block, 2 sig. With upgraded tubes they all sounded the same except the one sig 5150 that I kept that sounded a bit better than the rest but not much different.

Not to start another great amp debate but I have to disagree. I have 2 5150's and a 5150II one signature and one of the first ones they came out with wich was bought days after their release to the public.I have the exact same tubes in all of them and as far as the raw 5150 F.U.C.K sound my first year head is way better than the two new ones I bought recently.

That's cool my experiences have been the opposite but we're dealing with two different sets of ears and tastes. To me the difference is minute at best between the 4 I've owned.

Very true I could have gotten ahold of an odd amp. I know when I have to have it worked on (or any of my peavey amps)I take it directly to Peavey in Meridian,Ms wich is an hour from my house they have a hard time with it because i won't let them use anything that it didn't come out of the factory with so i usually have to leave it because they have to get the parts. But then again it could be because I'm half deaf from playing Eruption one to many times with the amps cranked to 9
