I'M GONNA VOTE FOR 1984 ONLY BECAUSE HE HAD FINALLY BUILT HIS OWN STUDIO AND COULD BE A SHIT HEAD ABOUT HIS SOUND ALL HE WANTED TO SO I THINK HE WAS MORE AT EASE AND COULD FINALLY TWEEK THINGS THE WAY HE WANTED AND NOT HAVE SOMEONE SCREW WITH IT. THE WHOLE RECORD JUST HAS A VERY SOLID YET LOOSY-GOOSY FEEL TO ME I LIKE IT.WISH I WERE THAT CONFIDENT!!!!

I though 1984 was loosey goosey but in a bad way,
not that the sound was horrible or anything it just sounds a little to raw to me like it was recorded in a raquetball court or something...hey wait a minute
I think VH 1 has got to be the best sound ever period but it seems that Ed didn't like it cause he never went back to that sound again.

VHI, and WACF. Live without a net, was probably my favorite live tone when the harmonizer was cut down in the mix.

Sorry guys......I love the Balance sound. I am not an expert on tone, but just the sound of his guitar on "Don't Tell Me" just rocks my world.
Actually I think most of us are Dave, Sam, and Mike fans. There's just a small group of people who have strange allegiances and like to get into petty pissing contests that I can't believe everyone on this site isn't bored of. - Brett

Anything that *doesn't* involve the 5150/Soldano amps.

Actually, I can really dig what was happening on 'Balance', except that one of my favorite aspects of Ed's playing is how he separates chords by zinging the top strings separately from the bottom during a rythm (syncopation, if you will), and I absolutely HATE the way his top 2 or 3 strings sound on the 5150 amp.

Listening to 'Feelin'' hurts my ears, plain & simple. It would've sounded so much better had he not zinged those top strings, or had he played through his Marshall Plexi.

It's just too sterile and too harsh.

I like the "fizz" of the top strings during tunes like 'Pretty Woman' and "Women in Love". Can't do that on a 5150.

To answer the original question: Anything between VH2 and OU812, inclusive.

WCf and FairWarning has his best sound I think.
During the Sammy years he just totally lost it.

VH 1 for sure. Heavy, ballsy sound, unlike much of the sound for that time on other artists albums .

Definitely Fair Warning. How can you not love the sound of Unchained ? WOW !!!

Any of the songs on that record just sound awesome. Even more so when you get the old vinyl out. The warm, raw sound from the vinyl for that album is unbeatable. Close your eyes and you can believe he's playing right in your room. Well, *ahem* I can anyway.

But then again, this is closely followed by VHI and 1984. But I can't choose between those two.

Any of Ed's early tones, a la You Really Got Me, etc. Basically I love his tone up through 1984, and then when 5150 came out I was like....WTF??? 5150 is too bright and clangy, OU812 is processed and squashed. FUCK is ok, and Balance had some nice tones, but nothing to compare with the raw, unbridled power of his early Marshall tone.
Eat Us and Smile...yeah we're still around.
