Someone help me figure this out. My 'G' string will not stay in tune...it's been that way since the last 3-4 string changes. Sometimes it'll go sharp, sometimes flat when I use the bar. I'm taking it in to get checked out tomorrow, but wondered if y'all can help me shed some light on this problem. Thanks!

Chances are you haven't stretched it out enough before you lock it down; the G string is usually a bit fussy.

The other thing I can think of is that your locking nut isn't contacting the string correctly in the nut; sometimes simply turning the nut 180 degrees will do the trick, if there's a groove worn in it from the G string.
Don't bark at me...<b>I</b> didn't name ya.

Ha! I knew I'd be in trouble when I mentioned G String!!!

Thanks Abe...it's probably the nut, since like I said, I've been through string changes and stretched the strings and it won't stay in tune. I'll take a look at my nut and turn it when I get home.....after I've opened myself for more creative posts....

I've seen this happen before. One of the things it could be is a crakced saddle block; the little black thing in the tail piece that gets pressed into the string by the locking screw. I've had two of them crack on me, but them again my floyd is quite old.

You can do a "self nut examination"

Place your finger on the G string above your locking nut, up on the headstock.....I think that's what you call it....

Pluck the string with your other hand.

Now apply presssure on the G string towards the headstock. If the pitch goes up as you apply pressure then your nut's slipping in the groove........or you could just take it off and look for a groove.......of course I am always into applying pressure just above my nut...........just read my tagline.

Actually I think most of us are Dave, Sam, and Mike fans. There's just a small group of people who have strange allegiances and like to get into petty pissing contests that I can't believe everyone on this site isn't bored of. - Brett
