in an interview i read w/ randy rhoads, the comment is made "some people believe you have copied edward van halen's hammer on technique" RR's reply was "well, we grew up in the same parts and we were influenced by the same people".......he never really answers the question. some people say RR developed it and some say EVH, any opinions?

I've read interviews with Randy where he openly admitted to copping that from Ed. Ed got the idea from watching Jimmy Page. I heard there were other players doing something similar to tapping long before Ed, but he's the one that revolutionized the technique and took it the whole nine yards. Anybody want to add anything? Brett? Glenn? Anybody?

Jazz boys were tapping in the 1920's so Ed didn't invent it. What he did do was connect the dots between pagish type of runs and the right hand stuff.

I guess the true indicator is when you hear anybody tap you think Ed so I guess that means something.

Yeah, I also read that Ed got the idea from watching page, but expanded on it into something of his own.

Look, Eddie Van Halen is Lord.Randy's old bass player in Quiet Riot said Eddie started it and Randy used to teach kids to play like Eddie in his house.

It's impossible to say how far Randy would have gone if he hadn't died in the plane crash. He was an incredible player for his time, but like Homeunit says, Eddie connected the dot's. He made it a viable playing technique, and every one, including Randy, took it from there.

Neither EVH nor RR created two hand tapping but EVH mastered it and everyone else started to copy it.

I had also heard that Steve Hackett was seen doing it before EVH. Steve Vai has claimed that he was doing it in his bedroom before anyone had ever heard of Van Halen. Of course Eddie popularized it and will always be given credit for "inventing" it. Although inventing the technique is kind of like saying that Columbus discovered America. Columbus made it popular, but there were others there before him.

well not to be nitpicky here but the question was about "hammer-on's" not "tapping." they are 2 different things. I know that's probably what he meant though, just trying to clarify.

Anyway, Eddie has NEVER said that he invented it and it doesn't matter because he does it the best

The hammer-on is played with the left hand on a string with the no use of the right hand for pick or tap ! ... Adding the right hand on the frets of the guitar ya got the tapping ! ... Did I explain the terms correctly !
Eddie didn't invent the tapping , he was only trying to do a Jimmy page solo at home after have seeing a convert of Led Zeppeling ! ... Mistaking ( for luck) he find the way to do that hammer on better , doing the tapping ! ...
Eddie didn't invent the tapping , but he improved that technics at high levels !
I remember that in the 80s about the 80% of guitarist used to play tapping for getting faster ! Now in the 2000 a lot of new guitarist don't know what tapping means ! ... Maybe we need a new Eddie Van Halen for open the eyes to a lot of people , or better re-open the eyes !

People have been tapping since the early day's, just in different styles. Eddie says he got the idea from Page. He has his technique. I have old Genesis album's where Steve Hackett does hammer on's from the early 70's. He does them the way Eddie does, but before Eddie. A little different, but similar. Listen to Get Em Out by Friday.

    I really don't know who INVENTED hammer-ons and pull-offs.
One of the main guitarists that really pushed that technique to incredible levels is the most respected guitarist by Eddie: Mr. Allan Holdsworth.
Eddie was and is a huge fan of him, and he really showed the world how to use that technique before Eddie. The problem for him is he played some jazz/fusion and not rock, so he didn't get to be known in the whole world. But he is a genius still shining of his light...
