I've seen a bass with a whammy bar on it. It had a bridge that looked like a larger version of a fender strat type bridge.
I didn't hear it play though, so I couldn't tell you what it sounded like.

Kahler made a whammy bar for basses. I remember seeing the ads on the back of Guitar Magazine around '85 or '86. I once seen a band where the bass player had one installed. He broke a string almost immediately.

Yea, if you're gonna use one it'd probably be a good idea to just have it drop in pitch like an evh type guitar.

In 1984, I saw Steve Morse on tour. His bass player at that time, I believe it was Jerry Peek, used a Kahler whammy on a few tunes. Very tasty.

Hey Xaminer, good to see you here.
Yea man, I didn't know that, but if anyone can use a whammy it's Les Claypool. He's a monster on the bass. I can't help but smile watching the way he attacks the strings sometimes.

I have seen Basses with Whammy bars, I would love to fuck around with one for awhile, see how it feels. I believe Billy Sheehan has used them also from time to time...

Here's a pic of a Kahler Bass Trem:
I'm putting one of these on my crappy beater guitar. They require not even half the routing a Floyd does.

Besides the Kahler, I've also seen a Steinberger bass with a Transtrem on it. Most bassists that I ever talked to about a whammy, seemed to say they knocked the tuning out of whack a bit too much. I suspect that the extra tension of bass strings, compared to guitar strings, are what made these things unstable. Plus, I'm sure having to use a regular nut didn't help matters any.
