I finally installed the SD EVH and it's everything I hoped it would be. It has all the sustain, harmonics, and in-your-face punch that I was missing from my SD Custom Custom. This pickup delivers!

Even though I had it potted (wax dipped), it was still pretty noisy through my 5150. I was able to remedy the problem quickly by plugging into the "Normal Gain" jack rather than using the "High Gain" jack I typically use and it made all the difference.

I'm extremely happy with this pickup and would recommend it to anyone looking to emulate the classic VH tone.

I got mine too. It's a great p/u but not for me.

If anyone wants it, email or PM me with an offer.

It's zebra, potted, single conductor, and spaced for a guitar with a trem. It has a grand total of 2 hours use.

HomeUnit, how would you describe the tone, in general, and compared to other pups??

And MojoDojo, how would YOU describe the tone compared to your old Custom Custom??? Do you have the new pickup aligned at the same height as the old one?

First, I set the two pups at the exact same height.

The tone itself is very similar between the two pups (EVH vs. Custom Custom), where's I think the EVH has a little more punch and might be a bit brighter. However, as I originally stated, my Custom Custom just lacked harmonics and sustain.

A good example would be if I tried to do the artificial harmonic VH "Horsie," you would have to hit it just right with my CC and it would die out fairly quickly, with the EVH, no problem.

I'm curious why the other poster doesn't like his.

It's not that I don't like it. I think it's a great pickup; it's just not what I want for the guitar it was to be used in. I have an Ash body and the EVH sounds great in it, but it sounds like an Eddie guitar now, and that's not what I'm after.

I was going to put it in my new custom which is a blend of woods, but the p/u that's in it now works best for what I'm doing, and Iím a firm believer in the saying ďif it ainít broke, donít fix itĒ.

The EVH p/u is a very honest sounding p/u. That is, it transmits the tone of your wood pretty clearly. In my ash guitar, I need a little artificial bottom to round out my tone. The EVH doesn't do that. If the wood of your guitar sounds more midy and high, (like mine) thatís what the EVH give you. It really accentuates what you're working with. The harmonic response and balance of power really is a nice touch.

It's very natural sounding, and I just wish I had a spare guitar to throw it in.
