Alright, I heard some people on here awhile back talking about taking the pickups out of the pickguard and screwing them straight into the body. I always thought it looked cooler like that anyways, so I tried it. Now I'm getting a little bit of unwanted feedback. Any ideas on what might have caused it?

You have to use the foam, I thought that was just an "option" or whatever.

Homeunit, you're gonna get me in trouble here.
bcgvh, you didn't mention whether it was a single coil or humbucker. The HD foam will help with height and some vibration, but it depends on the pickup and how it's wound. Also whether it's waxed enough to keep the winding securely in place. Some pickup models are just prone to squeal if they're fastened to the body.
Fastening any pickup off the shelf to the body will not give it more sustain.

MOST pickup feedback results from the loose copper wire windings vibrating and rubbing, not unlike cricket legs. If you forgot the foam, you may be transferring body vibrations directly into the pickup, which has 2 effects: 1)it could feed back, and 2) THEORETICALLY, the wasted energy exerted by vibrating the pickup itself would actually DECREASE sustain a hair (and I mean a real SMALL hair), but that's just theory. ANYTHING that absorbs vibrations on a guitar will cut back on sustain; to maximize sustain, you need to have EVERY part of the guitar SECURELY fastened. If you can't find suitable foam, but you're in a pinch, there's always: Band-Aids, cigarette butts, chewing gum (preferably Bubble-Yum, but any will do), Fun-Tac, Silly Putty, silicone sealant, pencil erasers, or a hard-boiled egg soaked in vinegar for a week. OK, OK, I watch too many MacGuyver reruns. Sue me!!

MacGyver was awesome!! I used to watch that show aallllll the time!
Anyways, the pickup I'm talking about is a humbucker. So do I just slide a piece of foam under it or what?
