Did he learn any scales or did he just use finger patterns for solos?

He says he never took lessons and the only thing he was ever taught was a few chords from a friend. He got where he is by listening to blues and rock records and just practiced, practiced, practiced, and got the notes under his fingers. Then he took everything he had learned and made his own style out of it.
Right Now...My gf is probably reading my posts.

Wheather he knows it or not he does know how to play scales and is obviously quite creative with them. Besides the fact that he practiced every waking moment he also simply has a gift, his uncanny ability to always end a lick and land on his feet with style still amazes me to this day.

That's an interesting question. If you think about it, the guitar is a really logical instrument...The scales are going to repeat quickly after they begin...Unlike, say, a trumpet which can be pretty confusing...

yeah, it is indeed a logical instrument.
and i agree, ed knows scales, although i'm sure he didn't learn them the conventional way.

Ed is a conservatory trained Pianist. I am sure he know his scales. It was I imagine, just a matter for him of applying his training to the fretboard.
Both Ed and Al are not only conservatory trained, but their parents (or at least their dad) were excellent musicians also.

One thing I have always admired about EVH though, is his ability to throw all of that shit out of the window and just go for it.
He seemed to have lost a little of that on the past couple of VH albums.

I for one would be happy to see him return to that seemingly forgotten attitude.

Yeah if you think about it he plays the guitar like a piano (ex. tapping. When Neil Schon first saw the guy he said he plays it like an organ.
"Well, he's an intelligent, well-read guy. But it's like he can't connect the dots somehow." (EVH Guitar World, March 1998).

EVH: "Yeah, except for the part near the end that sounds like Montoya or something."

a good part of ed s playing is classical based. but then he fused it with blues influence too.

I think rcrimm pretty much nailed it; Ed's had serious musical training on the piano at least, and though he often tries to pass himself as being "theory-challenged"; I really think that's done mostly tongue-in-cheek, and that he really knows substantially more than he lets on.

Not that it really matters at the end of the day though; he's a disgustingly intuitive musical genius who'd be equally awesome even if he really didn't know all the theory. Kinda like SRV whom it is claimed at least, often couldn't even tell you what key he was playing in; which still did nothing to keep him from being one of the greatest ever to pick up the instrument, along with Ed.

Not to dog anyone, but the guitar really is a great instrument for people who are good visual learners...all the patterns repeat. Makes me wonder if Ed and SRV were good at math or drawing?

When I tried to learn to read music I'd get frustrated at trying to understand it and my Dad (a school teacher) would say 'I told you to pay attention to Maths when you were at school!'

Seems like remember Ed saying that he just never thought in terms of scales and modes when it came to guitar, even though he knows his theory damn well.

Wasn't it his teacher at PCC that told him "if it sounds good, it IS good" ? The whole falling down the stairs and landing on your feet approach.
