Who inspires you guys to keep at it with such a lengthy absence by VH? These last few years, I have been either bored or appalled by the guitarists I've heard that I don't even listen to guitarists much anymore. I have found my inspiration mostly from '80's synth pop and classical music (mostly symphonies; I'm not a big concerto fan).

Of course, each new VH release (well, except for III, that one didn't do it for me) brings to the table a whole sh*tload of inspiration, but in the meantime, I just have to wait it out.

And please, if anyone has heard or heard of anyone doing something completely cool and unique, let me know! I'm starved for new music and could use a few tips.

Well I listen to healthy doses of Frank Zappa
Mike Keneally, and Dream Theater. Fuse that
with some Miles Davis and Dixie Dregs and you
get a mix that is consistant and never boring. Dweezil Zappa is getting ready to
release a guitar instrumental cd. That should be pretty interesting. Not the one with the two minute "best of EVH" solo, but it's guitar music none the less.

I listen to really shitty stuff and try and pick out the one good thing from it. Like a chord change or harmony. Then I take that, like 2 seconds of music, forget which tune it originally came from, and write a tune the way it SHOULD have been done around that little lick. That way you don't get accused of ripping off VH. And you come out with something that sounds exactly right to your ears. Frinstance... The first song I ever wrote had three notes from the start of the chorus of 'No big ting' by DLR! They formed part of the verse instead, and the tune turned out a piano ballad like 'say a little prayer' by Burt bacharach! I also took the chorus of 'To earth with love' by Gay Dad, used a phrase as the basis of a verse melody and rewrote an entirely different song. A huge improvement on the lame original tune. And if you're only ripping off 2 or 3 notes, it's okay in my book...

Speaking of blues-What I like to do from time to time is put on a concert boot of something like Stevie Ray or Buddy Guy and jam as if I were playing with them.

Just to let you guys know...

In all honesty, I don't like blues. I don't care for Stevie, Gary, Eric, Jimi, Robin, etc.

It's just not my cup of tea.

I'm looking for something a little fresher and more challenging. BTW, I don't like jazz either.

So, if there's anything really off the wall but worthwhile, please fill me in.
