Anybody hoping to steal a little bit of Jack Butler's mojo apparently now has their chance, thanks to celebrity auctions on E-bay.

Vai's axe

Hmmm... wonder how much this bad boy ends up going for?

The JEMs are sexy guitars. I've never had the pleasure (or displeasure?) of playing one though. How do they play? I love that finish he's got in the "Fool for your Love" video by Whitesnake where he throws the guitar down and taps piano style.
Right Now...My gf is probably reading my posts.

They play unbelievably.

I've outgrown the tone, but regarding the action and feel, especially if you do heavy-legato, it can't be beat. (off the shelf, that is)

The whammy on it is awesome too. It sucks the life out of the tone, but in all fairness, JEMs weren't created to be "classic-rock" tone monsters.

The top few frets are scalloped, which is awesome.

One thing that people possibly don't consider, is that not only can you play a little faster (again, depending on your style) on a guitar like that, but you can also practice *longer* at higher speeds with less fatigue. It's definitely the ultimate tool for a shred-monster.

When I played an Ibanez, my style was more about "rolling" up & down and back and forth on the fret board.....it became so easy with that incredible action and super loud pickup.

I don't know if you've heard of Shawn Lane, but he has a custom built guitar that supposedly has an aluminum neck with a maple fingerboard. I've read that the action is *sickeningly low*, and is almost identical at the 1st fret as it is in the higher ones....or as close as possible, that is.

.......off topic, sorry!

I have had the pleasure of owning 5 of them and all at one time (FP,VWH, VDY,DY,,Wjr, what I liked is that depending on what model you had they had different fret sizes, different pickups, different finishes, different neckwoods neck thicknesses etc and they all had a different tone, the reliablility of them was above other Ibanez guitars that I have owned, they are a little on the tone thin side because of the floating bridges but that can be overcome a bit.
But the funny thing is I hated the white Vwh (the model that Vai is most seen with) the tone was just not there and I know this is silly but the best sounding one of all of them was the Jem jr model , my tune "too Busy" and "Got Jammit" were done on the Jem jr and I have since sold all the others.

I have this exact guitat also signed by Steve Vai. I personnally had him sign mine while he was promoting his album at Tower Recods in Hollywood.

I never play mine so it's in dead mint condition.

BTW, they play great!
