Ok, I get all the supplies, I sand down the body, I seal it, I paint it, I tape it up, I paint it red. Then I go to take the tape off and it strips all of the paint off and takes the finish right back down to the original body. Im so damn frustrated right now, a week's work right in the shitter. Everyone I've talked to said why use sealer (polyurethane) first? Rol or somebody..what have I done wrong? I'm about to strip it down to the wood and start all over...

Dammit!

Hey Rols, I have a question about the supplies needed to paint a 5150 replica. What's the best brand of paint for this thing? And also, after I paint it I'm going to clear coat it because I don't want to rub off the paint. What's a good product to use for this? I've never done this before.

This is what Rol sent me:

TAPE:
3\4" (you can use regular electrical tape for this)
the blue 3M sizes are
1\2"
1\4"
3\16"
1\8"

-Krylon paint in Glossy White, Banner Red, and Black
-3 Sanding blocks in sizes course, medium and fine
-for sealer I just used polyurethane.
-a bag of 0000 grade steel wool

Hope that helps, don't put the poly on first though, that screwed me for some reason. A painter I talked to said I should've used white primer first, and then fine sanded to get it rough and to get it to stick better. Both layers peeled right off when I took off the tape stripes. Maybe Rol can elaborate on this for us.

The problem is Krylon doesn't stick to sealer very well. I did one and I scuffed the sealer then applied primer then did the base white coat.

well you have to seal the wood it just won't look fer shit if you don't, I use deft wood sealer either in gloss or satin it doesn't matter,
nothing sticks to a sealer very well that hasn't been prepped right, after you seal it you have to wet sand it to scuff it up then tack cloth it to remove any sand residue it may have left,
I have used Krylon for years it's fine with sealer
you just missed a step. call me 480-329-3874 or email me mail@rolsguitars.com and I'll help ya anyway I can.

Well, I sanded after I sealed, but I didnt WET sand. I only wet-sanded after I put the white on. Well, I'll see how it goes this time. I'm off to strip the old paint now.

Rol is correct, it's not that Krylon doesn't stick to sealer, its that it doesn't stick to sealer that hasn't been prepped correctly. He definitely knows a lot more about this than I do.

</font>
No problem. I didn't think you were baggin me. I made a blanket statement that Krylon doesn't stick to sealer. I left out that it does stick to properly prepared sealer. Hey man we all need correcting sometimes!
