I missed the why? part lol
To me a tube screamer acts like a normally driven tube. It feels the same and when used with an amps natural distortion they work well together, The Boss SOD is the pedal you use when you don't have a tube screamer, they sound good, but not by themselves

I think the best I've heard has to be the Klon Centaur. It sounds soooooooo good! It does a killer clean boost as well as a more distorted sound. Also, check out the SIB Vairdrive and the Crowther Audio "Hotcake." Bob Bradshaw makes a cool little overdrive pedal called Freddy Fuzz, it's basically a tube-screamer-type pedal with a hair more balls to it. Right now I use a Tubescreamer, but I have a Hotcake on order and eventually, I'll add in a Klon. It's hard to swallow paying $300+ for an overdrive pedal though. I'm waiting to stumble across a better deal on it.

The best distortion pedal? Answer: there isn't one because you should have a 5150 or a Marshall Plexi. Just kidding!

If you can't have an amp with distortion you like, go listen to pedals and get the one that sounds good to you.

I have a tube screamer just in case I want to switch from clean to distorted.

I have a DOD big pig or something. Since i have a crate digital amp it doesnt have the van halen sound its more of a led zeppelin. So i use a DOD. If i turn that pedal up to high its to heavy metal but crank the gain down and you get a nice tone.

I don't really use distortion pedals (I already have a 5150 and a POD), but for overdriving an amp,a Tube Screamer is probably the most 'musical' sounding. For more metal type sounds, I have to go with the Boss Metal Zone for its flexible midrange and heavy duty distortion. A ProCo RAT is a good choice for a clean distortion, and those Fuzz Faces are nice with single coils, assuming you only use it for single notes. I'm sure these new 'boutique' pedals have some good sounds, but I haven't heard any of them.

A charming little story: Years ago, when my first band was hosting an open stage 'jam night', I used my 5150 onstage. There was a guitar player in a Metallica/Pantera cover band that felt my amp didn't have enough 'gain'. ( !?) So he plugged a Tube Screamer into the front, cranked the pre gain on the amp to 10, the pedal distortion on 5, and he had active EMG's. The end result: while he wanted more crunch, what he got was MUD: word of advice---> when you have high output pickups and a high gain amp, an overdrive pedal is NOT the answer for more crunch; it just gets noisy and muddy. I asked him about it afterwards, and he said 'you can't play Metallica through a pussy Eddie Van Halen amp--it doesn't have any tone!' I actually laughed at him. The following year, I saw him again at one of his band's shows, and there it was: a 5150 on the other end of his cable. I still laugh about it today...

LMAO Abe Great story, I had a similar experience with a meatball trash head friend of mine.
He was getting ready to go into the studio to cut their first album and I offered him to use my amp. He said basically the same thing to me.
A week or so later he came to one of our rehersals and just for fun we did a couple of Pantera and Metalasellout tunes, and similar to your story, he not only did do the entire album with it, he now owns 2 5150's (the stupid asshole!)lol

Man can I relate to those stories! I have basically the same story. My band played before these complete metal idiots, wanna be Pantera/Korn nonsense. So we get off, and the first thing the singer/guitar player yells in the mic before they start is, "Now that the fags with the pussy sounding Van Halen amps are gone, here's some metal up yer ass!" A really genius with words this guy was. Anyways, he's playing a friggin' Strat with single coils through a Crate stack, the singer/guitarist and me in my band are cracking up! Talk about pussy sounding, and the tone was about the worst I have ever heard. Anyways, we ran across these knucklheads again and the moron singer guy was again playing that Strat, but I noticed he had purchased a "pussy Van Halen amp." What a tool.

I have a Boss HM-2 Metal Pedal that I've had for years. By itself it gets that early AC/DC type of sound, so that's ok I guess. I don't use it with my big amps, but I have used one with some smaller ones that needed a kick in the ass. I used it on my version of Panama in conjunction with my Rockman, but basically as a tone boost. (Didn't want to sound JUST like Tom Scholz.)

I haven't used an effects pedal in about ten yers, except for a crybaby. The rest of my stuff is rack gear. But I would vote for the Chandler TubeDriver. Eric Johnson uses one - I used to have a rack version, but traded it in to get my Marshall 9001. To be honest with you, I wish I had the Chandler back. Nice tone, and a good clean channel.

Wolfie - He was a such a crappy player and the band was such a bunch of wannabes, wasn't worth the effort frankly. The funny thing was that we were about 1000X louder than them, and they were a thrash band. These goofs tune to "Drop D" and think they're badasses or something. Whatever, they're probably signed now.
