First paint a yellow base, strip it with 3m tape then paint black?

The black & yellow VHII guitar was actually one the few (maybe the only) professionally painted guitars that Eddie owned back in the early days. Ironically, he once said it sounded like sh*t; he just played it live because it looked cool. I can't remember who made it for him. Wayne Charvel maybe? Anyone?

I had pretty good luck doing it the opposite way myself - started with a black Charvel body and then just taped and masked off, then sprayed the yellow after that. I have pictures of it at home that I can post later.

Course, anybody that remembers me talking about it a while back may recall that I ended up changing my mind and redoing it red black and white.

your one third right, actually Wayne Charvel and
Lyn Ellsworth built the guitar and Grover Jackson painted it, and the paint job was bullit proof, it had about a 1\4" thick coat of gloss on it,

rumor has it he didn't like it, he thought the pickup was too close to the bridge (and it is)

that was one of his guitar that had a really nice finish on it, if you want to do it like the real thing you really should have a gun and a booth and I know most people just have those hanging around, so you'll probably be using spray cans.
first of all it can be done, I did to see if it could and it could it's just 10 times the work,
you'll need to wet sand between the yellow and black caots with 600 grit wet paper, they make great foam fine wet sanding blocks that are great for this, also wet soand the final coat of black
and now comes the fun, you will need about 5 cans of clear gloss, you will need to wet sand after each coat again and after it has built up real nice (it will take a while an all the 5 cans)you wet sand it one final time them buff it out shiny
you arm is going to get a workout my friend

Yep, unfortunately, that's exactly how I did it, Rol...LOL

Lots of wet sanding, that's for sure.

Anyway, before I replaced the neck and pickup, or even put my clearcoat on, I changed my mind and did the frankenstrat look instead.

Here's a pic of it before my unexplainable 180...

Well I cheated.... I had Doc build mine. It was created from a Charvel model 2, Warmoth supplied the neck. What's ashame is that you cant see the beautiful birds eye through out the neck. And of course my trusty 5150 that I did build myself (and painted)is pictured also.
