    I heard it was just for a unique kind of look. I also noticed that most of the notches are slightly different from each other in depth. Could just be the way I'm looking at the wood underneath, or the guy who did the final sanding.

    I think you're right Tribb. I watched a clip on how they do that, and it's just some guy holding the headstock against a spinning sander. They just go till it looks good, and voila! So the depths will vary for sure. I think it makes the headstock look neat.
