I think the earlier albums had much better guitar riffs and solos.

I always liked the early stuff. He just had a real aggressive style that isn't evident too much any more. I guess money and Val would mellow anyone out.

Although the earlier albums probably were best, there's some great playing on OU812. The intro to Source of Infection, the Black and Blue solo, and the general playing on Cabo Wabo may not be as technically difficult as some of his other stuff, but they sound great, which is the most important thing.

There's some great playing on "5150," "Balance," and even "VH3." Most don't agree because they are in their "Dave Rules The Universe" mode, but some would agree.

Personally, I don't think there's anytime Edward hasn't been playing his best guitar. He's always been innovative, regardless of what "era" he's been in. Like Brett says, if you listen to the Sammy era stuff there's some incredible guitar work in there. He was using a different guitar and amp, which will obviously affect his sound, but I can't understand why anyone would say his stuff with Dave was more aggresive. A different vocalist will give the music a different twist, but I don't think Ed's writing ability
changed. Listen to A.F.U., or Judgement day.

    What Brett and Tribb said
I do think Ed was doing more inovative soloing in the early years, but from fair warrning on, I think his overall playing has kept improving and changing and growing

I think he played "faster" in the earlier days, then as time progressed, used less notes to "say the same thing" if you know what I mean. I remember reading an article where he talked about having to "re-learn" I'm The One for the 3 tour and saying something to the effect of how he didn't realize how fast he used to play. Regardless, Ed has always been a unique and innovative player and has show growth in his playing over the years. Despite what people thought of 3, he played some amazing stuff on it. I think "One I Want" is a very complex song to play....

With any luck, Eddie was playing his all-time best when recording the new record.

    Edward is always the king.
He is older and wiser now than 20 years ago That is reflected in his playing.
It's not really better or worse,

    it's just different.
