Did you guys know there are two ways of playing that solo? ... Just thought I'd start this thread to say that.

There's always more than 2 ways to play any solo, but to make it sound right you might as well play it in the right position.

When I play it, there's no such thing as the right way.

Eyes of the night, The "are" more than 2 ways of doing just about any solo, and still having them sound right. It might mean string skipping(a foreign term to you?), or other method of capturing the solo,
but it will still sound good. The notes don't have to be out of range if you can play, and have any idea of structure. By the right way, I meant having the right strings ringing for certain notes. A note played on the D string will obviously not sound the same when played on the high E string, even though it's the same note, so if Ed hit's a note on the D string, that's where it should be played to sound "right".
I also never claimed to have made 316 my own.
Of course, I may not be the guitar virtuoso that you are, but I have played a VH tune now and then, and I manage to hold my own.

Not always? Maybe on simplistic solo's such as RWTD. I think I know what your talkin' bout though as far as the "octave scale". But I think a lot of the solo's you try to play 2 different ways the "odd" or 2nd way would usually end up being too complex and out of range.

Right, I'm totally that way too glenn! lol ... Oh well It's like a lot of guitar players here at the links refer to it as their own 3:16 of the 3:16(ed's solo's). slol(stilllaughingoutloud) ...

That's the word I was looking for. String skiping, and yes I know excactly what your talkin' bout now. Your also right about the notes sounding different on other strings. You explained it perfectly! Gotcha

That whole 316 thing I must of said it wrong. By no means can I play 316 except just the beginning. I guess what I tried to say was that I've heard and read here at the links a reference point in which that players(including me) can't play anywhere near as good or "note for note" to Ed's technique. So in return, well for me, what I do is "my 316 to his 316". I use 316 as a basic term for all of Ed's solos(techniques) in his songs. I'm not that good brotha! I can't play half his shit.

Can anyone on this forum play 316 (the whole of Ed;s live solo) note for note? Because I think it would be near impossible to learn 12 mins of crazy wacked out EVH soloing.

Good question! I would have to say note for note no. There are kick ass players out there who can play his tecnique but as far as playing a "solo" of his would be like you said nearly impossible. I say this and it's just my opinion but a lot of what ed does "live" is his gift, improvisination his is "nich" so to' speak and that my friends is a tuff act to follow.

I guess my point is that all of his 316's are different in that each night he seems to be on a different level, but when it comes down to the "tools" he never has a problem! He never misses a note and if he ever did he covered it up with that "magic" of improvisination.

BTW nice too have met you mattyo5150! I hope ya stick around. You just might turn out to be the "chosen one"! lol ...
