I don't recall where I read it, but truer words may never have been spoken regarding guitar players:

"In the absence of virtuosity, we'll settle for speed."

Just food for thought. Got any other great sayings? This is the place to share them.

The lighter the gauge, the faster you'll be able to play.

If you can't play well, play loud.

Don't worry about mistakes, just turn up the distortion.

Have another beer, you'll play better.

Of course these are the effects Ed used, and if you want to sound like him you'll have to use them too.

have some more cocaine, you'll play better.

The rooms acoustics are all wrong, that's why I sound like shit.

Have another joint, you'll play better.

You're losing sustain cause the pickup isn't hot enough.

Of course basswood's a good body wood. Why else would they use it?

If you want to play the blues, you have to use a strat.

    etc...etc...etc...

OK, while I was hoping for a little more along the line of inspiring words, I guess an exposition of the ridiculous can achieve the same result if you really think about what's behind all the above remarks.

"Kurt Cobain is better than all those 80's guys because he didn't know what he was doing. His art was pure, while those guys actually had to practice."

"Kenny Wayne Shepherd is an original voice in music. Those who write him off as an SRV ripoff just can't hear the depth and subtlety of his playing."

"David Gilmour has about as pure a tone as I've ever heard; he only has that $80,000 rack/pedal setup to fill the backline of the stage."

"If you don't improvise, you're not making music-you're just lazy."

"This metronome doesn't work right; it may read the same # of beats per minute, but I can tell that it's speeding up on its own."

"Classical music has no feeling, while blues is pure emotion."

"Michael J Fox really played the guitar parts in Back to the Future."

"I won't use anything but Duracells in my pedals because they really affect the sound."

"Rap is the best kind of music because it has everything in it; rock sucks because it's just a bunch of guys screaming."

Some of the most inspiring "Words of Wisdom" regarding the guitar that I've been influenced by were from Yngwie Malmsteen interviews. The guy is so egotistic it's ridiculous but after reading him boast, it makes you wanna go pick up your guitar and play. It's really funny to read about him criticize everything and everyone about how they play "out of tune" and how "that solo was terrible" etc. He made me play better though IMO.

Everyone knows there's no one on the planet that plays as well, or with as much feeling as wengie. When his solos start, as long as you can hear the first note and the last, well that's the important part.
That's why he's such a major driving force in the music industry, and so many musicians and recording companies are beating on his door.
Also, no one plays the blues like wengie. I mean who else can pack 1000 notes into a 4 second blues lick, and of course that's what the blues is all about.
And rock, well there's no pioneer out there like my man wengie. He doesn't waste time doing string bends. They're for lousy players like Jeff Beck and Joe Satriani. Why bend a string? It takes way too much time to bend when you could throw at least 4 or 5 hundred notes in there in the same time span. Even if they are the same notes you've been playing for the last 10 songs in a row.
But hey, that's what guitar's all about. Just ask wengie.
As a matter of fact, I think we should have a thread in here called "Just ask Wengie",
so any questions about guitar can just be directed his way.

Nobody mentioned one we all know, but it's my favorite.
