    Guys,

I'm a new guitarist...I got a couple guitars for Christmas and am trying to teach myself to play. What magazine would you recommend for the newbie? Guitar, Guitar Player or Guitar One? Are any of them worth it? I'm leaning toward Guitar One.

    Chet

Chet, while Guitar One has tabs that are "stripped down" for newer guitarists, I don't think that you should limit yourself to just reading one magazine. I would check out each magazine monthly for content: guitarists you admire, tabs of songs you like, gear that you'd like to know more about, etc.

Don't worry about subscribing to any yet unless you instantly fall in love with one. With me, I think their current coverage is so spotty that it would be a waste of money having a subscription to all three:

Guitar World had excellent coverage in the 1980's/early-1990's and I had a monthly subscription to it. When GW's emphasis shifted to the alternative/punk scene, a lot of issues weren't worth reading IMHO. They may ocassionally have something of interest, though, and they always have a feature on EVH when a new VH album comes out.

Guitar Player has always had diverse coverage (which includes country, jazz, classical, world music, and so on) and chances are MOST of it wouldn't initially be of interest to the average hard rock fan, and that's okay. They still have had excellent interviews and features with rock guys, including some "early" ones with EVH.

Guitar One has a fairly decent variety of players and styles. But I still personally have to thumb through each issue before buying it.

    That's just my 2 cents.

is Guitar One the mag that used to be Guitar for the Practicing Musician? the one that had the little poster in the middle? that mag was so full of typos, i always wondered what amateur editor proofed it. always mixing up "cord" and "chord." little things like that irk me...

Thanks Scott. I will check out all three for a while at the newsstands and see which one I like best.

Yep, Guitar One was a "spin off" magazine of sorts of it's "parent" mag, GFTPM, and it's short-lived "older sister" gear mag, Guitar Shop. All three were published by Cherry Lane Publications. Production of GFTPM and Guitar Shop were stopped a couple of years ago, and all that's left now is Guitar One.

IMO, GFTPM was a pretty good magazine. I hated to see it go.

Buy them the news stands for now. Down the road I'd reccomend Guitar Player if you subscribe. I've had subscriptions to Guitar Player off and on for twenty years. It's written by guitarists for guitarists of all levels and styles. I'm a rocker ro the core but I think that it's important to be exposed to all types of music and you never know which artist will end up giving you the best advice. The lessons in the back are short but substantial and I find them as benificial as any TAB'd song in another mag. Plus the interviews are the best.

I'm not bashing the others at all, hell, I wish that I could have gotten music and TAB for all the songs that I was beating myself on the head to play.

The best advice I got out of Guitar Player came from Flea (Chili Peppers- a band I don't even like):

Never leave your wallet in the dressing room while you play a gig.
