As any Van Halen fan would know, "dive bombing" is one of the staples in EVH's sound.

My question is, how is the initial high pitched scream created? Is Ed creating a harmonic and then diving on the tremolo or is he just hitting a high note and then diving on the tremolo?

Help out a novice here.

Thanks,

Jeff

It's done by hitting a harmonic and dropping the tremolo.

he s doing a pinch harmonic, usually on the g string at the 2nd or 3rd fret, bending it up,then pushing down on the whammy bar with a slight quiver on the waydown.

Hit the 9th fret harmonics then the whammy, it sounds pretty wild. I've seen Ed hit that wierd harmonic at the 2nd fret and dive too.
I only call it wierd cause it's a bugger to find!

You can get a nice "whinnie" on the b-8th fret.
And beyond the horizon.... a sound was heard.

Its strange, when i see him pressing down on the bar, the pitch goes up, and he does the same thing and the pitch goes down...????

No.

What he's doing is depressing the bar first, then hitting the note, and then slowly "allowing" the bar to rise again. Yes, it does almost look like he's pressing down even though the note is rising, but that's not the case.

Another trick he does his pull off (from any fret) to an open string (let's say the g string), drop the bar down REAL quick, and then ever so slightly touch the string over the 5th, 7th, or 9th fret while the bar is slowly being being "allowed" back up.

Once you get the timing down, it's like riding a bike.....you don't forget.

No picking is involved at all in that last lick.

I did it (a few too many times) in this clip :
