Which do you prefer to do. I myself find learning things by ear is sooooo much easier than tab. Not that Tab is hard I just am good at picking (ooh bad pun) things out.

I can pick out Page and Clapton and hendrix by ear, but with van halen I need the tab to get it right. And even with the tab, some of it I can't physically do. The intro to hot for teacher. i know HOW to play it, but I CAN't Play it. I just cant move both hands that fast.

how in the world can you play stuff by ear, i try to play layla, and it takes 10 mins just to squeeze out the first notes. i saw a VH1(the station) special on clapton, and he just plays the first bars to layla, it kicked ass, he didn't even have to think about it. thats the first time i've seen someone do that. i was blown away by that simplicity that is so common.

I guess alot of the reason I am able to do that is I wasn't given a tuner until I got a twelve string (about 2-3 years after i started playing) So i was forced to recognize pitches and keys and things like that. I didn't like doing it at the time but now I see that it really has been to my benefit.

everyone is different guys, some people are good at one and bad at the other. I know people who won't even try without the tab or sheet music but I can play alot by ear and can't or won't use tab. I don't have the patience to sit there and read it when I can FEEL it with my fingers. It just comes natural to some. Now for solos and fast stuff like that it's a little harder.

These days I play by ear, when was learning note for note stuff, I would figure it out by ear, then check the tab. I always found that the best way to learn, after a while I began to see all the mistakes in the tab

If I learn a tune with tabs, I forget them too quickly. The ones that are learned by ear stick with me a lot longer. The bad thing about this, is if you learn it wrong, its sometimes hard to re-learn it the right way! By ear is the way to go usually.

I've got tons of songs in tab, but I'm mainly an ear player. A lot of times, after I've learned a song I'll go buy a mag that has it in there and check what I picked out to what they transcribed. Also, I look at tabs for real difficult parts, or for something I can't quite make out on a song, other than that it's all ear.
