I'm sorry but the 5150 amp just sounds like a heap of buzzy garbage to me. I really think all the years of touring has effected Eddies ears. I think he can't hear the treble as much anymore. The high frequencies are the ones that go first. Why else would he have put away his marshals in favor of the 5150? Money? I don't by that.

I will say that VH3 had some better guitar sounds but over all The earlier records just sound warmer and badder(in a good way) then the noises he's making these days. Just my opinion.

    That's pretty funny Push!

I thought that the VH3 live tone was the worst I've ever heard from Ed! A lot seemed to like it but to me it was too much gain buzzsaw noise!

The thing with a 5150 is you need to turn them up well past 5 before you get those output tubes cooking hot enough to loses that buz shit!

I would say that the most consistant blunder people make with the 5150 is too much gain/resonance and not enough volume

Do you think that VH3 tour sound has anything to do with the Wolfgang guitars? Because Ed's been using 5150 amps since the F.U.C.K. tour. I've never played a Wolfgang, so I don't know what they sound like when they're played through a 5150 vs. a Marshall.

Tribb's the gut to ask, but Ed was using some Wolf Prototypes during the Balance tour an as far as I can remember, they sounded fine, (I'll have to have a second listen). But thet were prototypes so who knows what the guts were.

IMO the Balnce tour was some of Ed's best tones, and when I heard the 3 stuff, I thought the same thing! I'm not a big Wolf fan myself and I've played more lemons than keepers, so my opinion is biased!

I fucking LOVED Ed's tone on the 3 tour! Fucking raw and kick-ass all the way. He hadn't sounded that good since the first album to me. I just love that tone. The complete opposite of his sound on the few previous tours (and albums) before that. Especially OU812 and FUCK. That was really half the reason I wasn't crazy about those albums.

It's weird how the live tone was no where to be found on the album. Hopefully we'll get it on the new album.

    Wow this is nuts!

    We should have a poll!

It seems you either love the 3 live tone or you hate it!

The wolfgang's sound great I have three. Its the 5150 that sounds all buzzy. I will agree that most people use too much gain without turning up the amp but believe me I have owned the 5150 and even with the amp turned up it still sounds like a chain saw to my ears.

My 71 Marshall simply blows it away. Its not even close. As far as VH3 goes. I can't imagine anyone preferring the guitar sounds on Balance over 3. There is that buzzy sound on certain tunes but over all The tone just stomps all over the previous few records but that's just my opinion.

I agree 100% with Push. I could never get a sound I considered good out of my 5150, but I kept at it because of the gain it had, trying to ignore the hiss, squeal, grittyness, and cold sound it had. Then I stumbled across a guy with a marshall. He had it modded, and finally told me who did it for him. After getting one and playing it I couldn't go back to a 5150. There's just no reason.

You know Eddie's tone changed ALOT between the Balance and 3 tours. But for the most part he was using the same equipment, right? Well, I know he used an Ernie Ball for most of the songs on Balance, but I'm talking about the few songs he used the Wolfgangs on. The 3 tour did sound a lot more like the VH1 sound too. You really can't compare the different tones Ed's used through the tours because each one was quite different, but in a good way. I don't think you could say any of them sucked. A lot of people hated the sound Eddie had during the US Festival '83 show. Just my opinion.

don't get me wrong, i love the guy and he kicks ass, but i'd rather hear the tone from the earlier days. the tone from 3 sounded too clean to me, just my opinion.

well (sarcasm alert) since none of us have heard Ed's NEW tone, I can't speculate. I bet it kicks ass. I like the sound of the VH3 cd but the live show was really raw. Year to the Day really smoked and sounded different though.

The last time Ed had as good of tone as he did on the 3 tour was the 5150 tour.

I bought a 5150 because it was cheap.

I looked at Marshalls and Mesa's, but,....the 5150 was a cheap, reliable amp that looked cool!

I didn't even play one! Hell I was using a 20-watt Peavey Combo at the time I purchased mine.

You dudes are really fuckin' into "tone". I've noticed differences in Ed's sound throughtout the years, but I always think it's just the amount of delay and chorus he has on his singal. I don't care what amp he's playing in what ever decade, when he's playing shit like Poundcake and Cabo Wabo, he's got a shit load of effects on the live stuff. When he play the live shit on the "3" Tour, it was dry. Real dry.
