i'm hoping somebody here might help me identify a guitar i have just picked up locally...
let me tell you a little about it first...

solid black body, hum/single/single, fender style trem, chrome volume(1) & tone(2) knobs (stock???), maple neck with skunk stripe, maple fretboard, nice big frets, neck has glossy clear finish and of course bolts on, 5 position selector switch, no pickguard, body has "belly/chest" and "forearm" tapers on back and front of body, the output jack comes out of the butt end of the body, not on the front...

headstock says: "squier II by fender", "stratocaster", "made in korea", "serial # s 958601"

the guy i got it from said he thought it was an early squier, possibly a '79 year model... if this is true it's in overal decent shape, obviously played, but with just a few minor imperfections and very small chips and normal swirl marks in finish...

all that told, what i'm trying to figure out is how old this strat is, is/was it a pretty decent model, and what might it realistically be worth...i'm not really sure i need it... i have a wolfgang, an olp mm-1, and a squier affinity strat(currently undergoing a VH1 makeover)... i might put it on ebay, or even trade it for something... or one of you guys might convince me otherwise...

anyways, thanks in advance... i know one of you cats knows exactly what i have or can tell me where to find out!!! i'm still kinda a rookie to this guitar deal anyways...

They came out with the Squire II series in 86 so I'm afraid there's no chance of it being a 70's model. Some of the Ser.#'s with the S prefix were japanese from the 70's but the serial no.'s got mixed up a lot and as I said the Squire II's started production around 86 and are still made today. The S prefix before the no. is probably part of a signature series. Unfortunately you can't really date a korean squire II by the ser. # accurately because they copied a no. of japanese ser. #'s and recycled them.
You didn't mention whether it's got the fender "bullet", that little bullet that comes out just behind the nut for neck adjustment. That would make it part of the bullet series.
From what you do describe it sounds like it's possibly part of the stagemaster series, and could be a pretty recent guitar, possibly no more than 2-3 years old, although it could be a late 80's. Check inside the trem cavity at the back to see if it's a plywood body. It could be agathis which is about 1/2 step up from plywood. If it appears to be solid wood it may be an alder body which would be a much better wood and probably a better series.
A guitar that's in mint condition could be worth up to 300., but with any scratches you're probably looking at about 200-250. with case.
They made and still make a hell of a lot of squires and a no. are pretty decent playing instruments.
The most sought after squires are the ones made between the years of 82 and 84 in japan.
A number of those guitars are real killers and probably some of the best sounding and playing strats fender ever put out period. I've played a few of those early japanese squires and they were great, one of them being one of the best sounding strats I've ever played.
If you get one of those hang onto it.

your guitar is made in 95... i can be wrong, but i think that the first two letters stand for the year...

Go to www.fender.com they got some info on the Squier models there...

Here's a FAQ that might help too...

Q. "If I give you the serial number, can you tell me what year and model my Squier guitar/bass is?"
A. While we may not be able to tell you the exact model of your older Squier from the serial number, we may be able to give you an approximate date of production. If you contact our Consumer Relations Department at 480-596-7195 a representative will try to provide you with some background on your Squier instrument. *Please note that records on the imported Squier instruments are somewhat sketchy and dating them can sometimes be a challenge.
Also check... http://www.squierguitars.com/

thanks for the help...
anybody else with any ideas, feel free to give them!!!

... also i was getting curious (and bored!!!), so i took the strings off and took the neck loose from the body and found these #'s stamped on it:
90 3 28
and someone told me that it means the neck was manufactured march 28, 1990...

and the body is plywood... (bummer )

which leads me to believe this strat is probabbly about 1990 vintage...
that sound about right???

I haven't heard back yet from the person I was waiting to hear from, but your right about the neck stamp, and if it's the plywood model you're looking at about 200. as a top value.
Wish I had better news but with a plywood body it's not worth modding or worrying about the actual model.
Just call it a squire 2 and see if you can off it on ebay.

thanks guys, i appreciate your help...

when i saw the plywood body, i was extremely disappointed, but actually, i bought it to resell, guess i was just hoping for a "lucky find"...

but on the bright side, i only paid $70 for it (with a gigbag), and since it's black, i could just go ahead and yellow stripe it if i wanted to (don't sue me ed!!! LOL)...

but i think i'll list it on ebay first...
i figure to set a reserve around $120 probably, since it has a few minor imperfections...

btw, what is a good reasonable price for shipping on a guitar??? i've seen everything from $15 to $40...

this is a place to look for a manufacture date but if Tribb says the numbers are all mixed up then this won't help, it says an S9 followed by 5 digits was made from 78' to 81'
but like Tribb says that doesn't jive with a squire II

Yea, unfortunately that only applies to US and Japanese made guitars.
They didn't start manufacture of the squire II models till around 1986.
The body and neck can be off each other date wise, but that still means it was manufactured around 90.
