Thread: New UBB version

I was just curious....how long have you guys been using the new version of the board? And were you having any problems with the old version? As you're probably aware, the PD has been plagued with posting problems and Who's Online is all screwy. Is the new version an improvement?

It's been up about a month now I would guess, actually I think it went live November 6. The old version was fine, but once somebody exploited my password somehow via a browser, and deleted a whole forum, I knew it was time to upgrade. We've never had the Who's Online or posting problems the PD has had, so those weren't issues to me.

Large threads going blank and general poor coding that was slowing the board down were my real issues. And of course that huge security hole that got by me and the UBB people that allowed some jackass to screw with the board certainly made my decision to upgrade easier. This version is faster and a heck of a lot more bug free and secure than 6.0x ever was. Big improvement I'll say, but the code is a lot different and it took me almost a month to get all my features and hacks back in, working bug free.

It's much faster than the PD, and much, much faster loading than the Army. Very nice work Brett.

A few thoughts on the subject:

The PD has had bugs that I've seen no other UBB have. It's bizarre. My only guess would be poor implementation of hacks by Brad... Brad's no dummy, so who knows?

From what I've seen, VHForums is always far slower than the other boards. I've accessed this site with dial-up, DSL, and T1 from home and at work, and it always takes at least several seconds to load up the forum summary page. The topic pages of course take much longer.

Well, seems hit or miss. Like right now, at work on my T1, I'm flying along, but it does lag sometimes too.

The problems at the PD might also be server related.

However, here's something interesting. Over at UBBDev.com, Allen who runs the site, asked me how I got this board running so fast, despite its size. So go figure.

I think the problem over @ PD is that the Perl installation is screwy, cuz that board had problems even before UBB6 was implemented there.

I like the 6.1.x.x series better, they made all these little changes to make life easier

6.1.x.x is world's greater than 6.0x, which was a clunky mess IMO. Apparently 6.2, which is due out fairly soon will actually finally have the Who's Online feature as part of it, so we don't have to hack it in every freaking time we upgrade. One less to worry about.

This is exactly why I'm waiting to upgrade. The "Recent Visitors" feature looks to be a winner.
