A forum just for ALex, that would be cool.

I don't have an answer to your question, but am always interested in AVH, being a drummer myself.

I've always wondered this, Why doesn't Al incorperate more Double-Bass to their songs? Like on "livewithoutanet" where Al kicked it into 5th gear as Ed came out of his solo to 5150! Now that made my hair on my arms stand!

As a drummer I'll try to answer this one as best as possible. Yes I agree Al hasn't ripped a double bass roll like that in quite a while playing in concert and I think the reason is because Al is maturing as a player and that is not a scary thing as it sounds. As a drummer , I myself have been searching for more substance and have taken on the less is more role and my playing has taken a turn for the better!! There is nothing wrong with laying down a good solid groove without a lot of meaningless fills. A few things have made me realize this-- 1) Watching VH in concert, esp. the balance and 3 tours. The band just grooves like a motherfucker when Big Al is really concentrating on just keeping that amazing pulse w/o some fills, note the live vers. of Amsterdam from the Toronto gig ( pay per view 95 Balance )during Eds solo. 2) Watching Phil Rudd from ac/dc in concert 8 times. When you see 18,000 peoples right foot go up and down in sync with what Phil's playing and you see everyone getting into the GROOVE it is truly an amazing sight. Phil Rudd makes 18,000 head bangers want to dance!! Groove does that to people ,it does not really matter what type of music it is. 3) Watch a guitar player like Clapton and see how good that guy can really play!! Sometimes the man does the most simplest thing , but it is done at the right moment and with the right FEEL and that one or two notes is better than a million. NO wonder ED has always taked this guy up. In fact I really see Ed's playing taking a turn like this too, and then we'll really see how good he is -- WOW

Good answer Stick, I would agree.

Many of the bootlegs however showcase Alex's thunderous quad beats, usually at the end of a song. He is more than capable, but like Stick says, he's more interested in the groove.

I concure, i am also a drummer and play alot of fast stuff. ya don't want to do it all the time it looses it's impact. we still see it with older songs and his solo. plus i would not be suprised if there is a good dose of it on the new stuff.
