THE DOORS Perform 'Secret' Hollywood Gig - Sep. 4, 2002

THE DOORS, featuring THE CULT frontman Ian Astbury and ex-THE POLICE drummer Stewart Copeland, performed a secret show at the House Of Blues in West Hollywood, California last night as a warm-up for their announced reunion show on September 6th at the California Motor Speedway as part of the Harley-Davidson 100th Anniversary Open Road Tour. The entire event was reportedly taped for an upcoming release through Bright Midnight Records, a label formed and operated by The Doors Music Company.

According to reports, THE DOORS performed a four-song set consisting of the following:

01. Roadhouse Blues
02. Strange Days
03. Love Me Two Times
04. When The Music's Over

During the interview segment of the show, which was conducted by veteran Los Angeles DJ Jim Ladd, THE DOORS mainstays Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger revealed plans to compose music for a new THE DOORS CD, which will apparently feature Astbury on lead vocals. A late 2003 release is expected.

I think Copeland is a great replacement. I never would have thought of that.

I like the Cult, but did not like Ian Astbury on the Doors Storytellers. To me, Scott Weiland and Travis Meeks kicked everyone's ass.

Last time Manzarek talked about a new Doors record, he said that Astbury and Weiland would share vocal duties. STP is gearing up for a new record and a 'return to basics. 10 songs, all rockers and only 1 overdub a piece'-type record, so I don't see Weiland having time to do it. I guess AStbury is the new Morrison--as long as its not Scott STapp.

I've heard he's either not physically able to perform because of a back (I think?) problem, and I've also heard he and the other two, ray and robbie, don't get along.

Well, technically you'd need Jim Morrison, too, but I don't see that happening, so once you're missing one, what's another one?

While I LOVE the concept of Bright Midnight records releasing a lot of their old stuff, my opinion is that until you find a way to resurrect Jimbo, there's no way to resurrect the Doors.

THE CULT Frontman Named 'Permanent' Member Of THE DOORS - Sep. 10, 2002

THE CULT frontman Ian Astbury and former POLICE drummer Stewart Copeland have "permanently" joined THE DOORS and will record new music with the group during 2003, keyboardist Ray Manzarek told Billboard.com. "Stewart is drumming from here on out. Ian is singing from here on out. We're not doing a TV show. We're playing live music. This is the new DOORS lineup for the 21st century," Manzarek said.

A North American/European tour is also in the works for next year, and while Manzarek says it is too early to predict how extensive the jaunt may be, he promises it "will definitely not be 60 cities." THE DOORS will perform at Molson Park in Barrie, Ontario, just outside of Toronto, on September 29th.

This is disgraceful. Ray comes off as a first class jackass in his book, and this does nothing to dispel the notion. I wouldn't put a nickel into this farce.

Also, I wonder what Copeland would think if Sting and Andy reformed the Police without him?

As I've said, the album is to have guest stars. Scott Weiland (a much better fit--and more releveant and more talented than Ian) is one of them. Originally, it was supposed to be the two of them sharing lead singing duties.

I thougt Ian sounded really good on the Storyteller's episode, I thought Stap sounded like a bozo. But that's probably because I actually like The Cult and I wish everyone in Creed would die in some terrible way, not really but I wouldnt be sad if it happened.

ok let's just say this right off the bat--The Cult fuckin' ROCKS!

and before I even saw this thread, the other day I was watching VH1 classic and they had a Cult video on and Ian had on this cowboy hat and I commented to my girlfriend how he kinda looked like Jim.

he even has the same kind of vocal style

BUT

it aint The Doors without Jim

Ray wanted a singer that could go out and tour with the new record, but Weiland is too busy recording the next STP album and supposedly another solo disc.
