I have to admit, I was skeptical, but the Atomic Punks show on Friday night in Phoenix at the Cajun House was great!

You could have sworn that the singer was indeed DLR and it was 1978 all over again. Even when the guy talked to the crowd, his voice sounds EXACTLY like Dave! "Ed" was pretty good too, .....to be honest, they guy was DAMN good. Considering, I don't know too many guitarists that would even TRY and play Ed's music in front of a crowd. He wore a pretty bad wig, though (lol).

They opened with "Somebody Get Me a Doctor" and from there....(not the exact order):

    Everybody Wants Some
    Bottoms Up
    Beautiful Girls
    Dance the Night Away
    Panama
    Runnin with the Devil
    You Really Got Me
Jamie's Crying (one of my favs!)
    Eruption
    Ice Cream Man
    Bull Dog (I think?)
    So This is Love
    Hot For Teacher
    Atomic Punk (of course)
    Unchained

hmmmmm...I'm sure there were more, but that's all I can remember right now.

They really did sound great! It was almost like having the real thing. We had a great time.

The opening band was TNT and let me tell you right now, if you are an AC/DC fan, I recommend that you NOT miss these guys. They are good, too!

    Phoenix, any other reviews?

Well, I enjoyed the show immensely on Friday, and was blown away by the size of the crowd. It must have been at least 1000. The guitar player, Brian Young, is an old aquaitance of mine from the hometown area (Ventura County, CA), I even worked with him briefly in a LA area band he was a part of in the late eighties called L'Amour, and I've admired his playing for years. When we were both attending Musician's Institute in the early eighties, I used to go over to this *&^%hole apartment he lived in off of Highland Avenue and Hollywood Blvd. and we would jam (I'm a bassist) a little, but mostly I would raid his collection of boots, he always had a cool VH one hanging around...

I always associated his playing to his love of Randy Rhoads' style more so than EVH. Have you ever heard the live solo that RR did in the Ozzy days? Brian knows it note for note. The first time I saw him play was at a house party in Camarillo, CA, circa 1980-1981, and I walked into the party in the middle of 'Highway Star'. Brian did both Jon Lord's keyboard solo and Ritchie Blackmore's guitar solo note for note. So the guy has a great ear, obviously, and has always been a superb player, but I swear, and it is MHO only, but I think he's approaching what I refer to as 'master' status when it comes to technique.

I got a chance to exchange pleasantries with him briefly before he was mobbed by the obligatory babes, I haven't seen him in 13, 14 years. I hope he gets some session work and/or is able to do some original work at some point.

The rest of the band was great, too, and Ralph has the whole routine down to a tee, although I find it curious that half the band is truly trying to do an impersonation, sound, look, antics, etc., while the other half just plays the songs. Not a complaint, just an observation.

I asked Brian to add 'Romeo Delight' and 'Light Up The Sky' to the set, he said they know the songs, but usually don't have the time for them. Oh well, just my personal faves, didn't hurt to ask.

Oh, go ahead and rub it in guys! I'm still feeling like an ass for missing their gig in San Diego the day before. I might just have to go up to their next gig at The Wiskey. I haven't seen them since Bart left for the DLR Band tour.

Do these guys ever tour outside of California? We've got a few tribute bands coming here in the next few months (Led Zep, The Doors, SRV, etc) but I've always wanted to see if we could get the Punks out here to the Mid West.

They sound like they RULE in concert!

I saw that VHDOF. Thanks for the invite. The thought of driving 6 hours for a 2 hour show by and Van Halen tribute band was not my thing. I still feel stupid for my f-up.

    No big thing, Top T.

Gotta laugh at yourself every now and then.

(Because god knows WE laugh at you. LOL. )

(Thinking back to Adam Sandler's bit, "They're all gonna laugh at you! They're all gonna laugh at you!" )

Thanks, VHDOF. Check out the thread right here in "Music Only" called, "Cheap Trick - At Budokan - The Complete Concert."

There's some talk about "Heaven Tonight" there.
