I flat-out love this band! They are without a doubt the best band to come out in recent years. Their debut album, Is This It, is awesome. Every song is good and it harkens back to the good ole days where rock records were short without any filler. Anyway, their sound is sort of retro-ish sounding, but it still sounds pretty fresh and new to me. As for guitar playing, some of the solos in songs like "The Modern Age" smoke. They'll be on SNL January 19th, if anybody's interested, add to that, "Last Nite" gets a fair amount of airplay on MTV. Okay, I'm done raving. I just haven't been this enthusiastic about a band in a LONG time. I think the last one was a band called Van Halen. Do any of you remember them?

i haven't heard them yet. check out this blurb from one of our local free papers:

What Goes Up...

Strokes mania builds to a carpal-tunnel-inducing frenzy this month, as critics rush to include the band’s Is This It on year-end lists. But a backlash (backstroke?) against the scruffy New York-based neo-proto-punk quintet is also in motion. Anonymous hipsters billing themselves as Diff’rent Strokes have released a disc of Kraftwerk-styled Strokes covers, titled This Isn’t It. Buddyhead.com reports that the Strokes tour bus was recently defaced with the spray-painted slogan "$UCKN DICK$." Elastica’s Justine Frischmann told NME last month that she witnessed the band hoovering "huuuge, fat lines," and predicted "they will fuck up pretty soon." And closer to home, local artist/rock connoisseur Derek Hess warned visitors to derekhess.com’s news section that the band is an industry invention with as much integrity as the Backstreet Boys. On a more positive note, the band’s MTV- and critic-driven popularity spells bad news for Limp Bizkit’s trend-hopping Fred Durst, who’ll be left behind if he can’t squeeze into the Strokes’ skintight fashions.

Looking them up on WinMX now......

And hoping that the reference to them being "an industry creation with all the integrity of the Backdoor Boys" is wrong.

**UPDATE**

Listened to a few songs...

I don't think this is an industry fake thing. Otherwise they would sound more polished (i.e. Blink 182, Sum 41, etc.)

Vocalist sounds like a genetic engineering experiment using DNA from Billy Idol, Bono, and Ian Astbury from The Cult.

Musically, it sounds like the entire late 70's and early 80's were thrown into a food processor. I can hear bits and pieces and just about every band from that era in here. EXCEPT Van Halen, oddly enough. Some parts are blatant enough ripoffs that lawyers could have a field day.. The Offspring and The Misfits should share songwriting credits on "Hard to Explain", for example, and while it's less obvious, "Last Nite" owes a HELL of a lot to Tom Petty's "American Girl".

Hell, I might pick this CD up just based on the curiosity factor alone, but I'm not sure I'm as convinced as Vic that they're the next "Van Halen" by a long shot...

Welcome back, Van HALEN!!!!

...It's the BAND and Dave is really the cat that can front VH. He sang his ASS off and was really cool. No cheese here guys, this is filet Mignon! - Steve Lukather's comment after witnessing a Van HALEN 2007 rehearsal

They've been in a couple of magazines lately......I think I'll get on wimmx too and check 'em out
Actually I think most of us are Dave, Sam, and Mike fans. There's just a small group of people who have strange allegiances and like to get into petty pissing contests that I can't believe everyone on this site isn't bored of. - Brett

Well, I never said I thought they'd be the next Van Halen, there's really no comparison between the two. I meant I haven't gone this nuts over a band since Van Halen. As for your thoughts, interesting. I can definitely hear American Girl in the opening chords of Last Nite, but as for your Offspring comparison, ugh. I hate The Offspring. I can't say I notice that, but it's nice to get different perspectives on them.

Saw the New Years eve with Guided by Voices.. THEY WHERE EVERYTHING THE HYPE SAYS! Thats rare these days. Yeah, they are more or less a garage band.. how cool is that!? Dont expect any musical masterpieces, or virtuoso playing, but DO expect solid, well crafted Rock songs! They border on Alt-rock, but their style easily interchangeable & can morf from song to song.. cant say enough good things about these guys!

I've really noticed an increased hype campagin about this band for the past 9 months. I tried em out, didn't take the first time, but I guess I'll try them again. They sound a little punky to me, you know, three chords and the truth, which is ok, but begins to wear after mulitple listens. Wouldn't be my first choice (or a choice at all) for the proverbial "lost on a desert island" bit.
I will admit the propoganda machine is textbook in this case. I wish my band could get even a fraction of attention.

I have been hearing that some are calling them the next nirvana, which is a joke. Whether you like nirvana or not, they changed (or got credit for) changing music and creating a whole new sound....sort of.
The Strokes come nowhere close to a new sound. Its like somebody already said, they sound kinda 70ish. It's amazing how hype can make a band these days. FORD, you said that you don't think that the Strokes are an industy made band just because their sound is'nt polished but THATS THE GIMMICK...if they are in fact an industy made band.
