NEWS - Stone Temple Pilots' Scott Weiland Healthy But Disappointed
    01/09/2002

(1/9/02, 10 a.m. ET) -- Stone Temple Pilots vocalist Scott Weiland was in Orlando, Florida on New Year's Eve to play a show at Universal Studios, but he did take the time out to take his son Noah, wife Mary, and his wife's sister to the attractions there. Apparently Weiland and family have moved beyond a spousal abuse incident that occurred last November, for which Weiland has pled guilty to a charge of battery.

Weiland recently called into the Stone Temple Pilots website to thank fans for their support. He talked about his health and his disappointment with the commercial success of STP's latest album, Shangri-La Dee Da. "I want to let everyone know that I am totally healthy--mind, body, and soul--and so is that of my family. We are all together and the bond between us has never been better. Lastly, I guess, I want to apologize to all of you for turning my back on you, the fans, and not showing appreciation for your love and support. The fact is Shangri-La broke my heart, I put everything into that album, believing if I could get real and honest but it was virtually ignored and I was wrong. I'm tired of looking for blame in this and I am in acceptance over it although it took a long time."

Weiland added, "The truth for me now, today, is that there is more to life than music and art, so much more. I want to know who I really am. I'm not sure that I truly do. I am happy today and that's all I know. Whatever happens for me musically in the future has yet to be seen by you or me."

Stone Temple Pilots still plan to release "Wonderful" from Shangri-La Dee Da as a single, and are considering making a video for the song. There has been no word as to when the single will be released.

    -- Darren Davis, New York

Ahh, nothing is quite so pleasing as reading a wife beater talk about how happy and stable his family is.

I don't see the end of STP ever coming in my eyes and ears. They are my favorite band. It's good that Scott has stayed off the drugs, it must be hard for him.

What do you guys think of them? I happen to think they are THE most underrated band around. There are plenty of bands who are able to either rock harder, write better hits, be more artistic, etc., but I don't think any one band puts it all together like they do. And of course, Scott Weiland is the last living rock star. With another batch of musicians succumbing to drugs, it's great as an STP fan that Weiland kicked the habit, is going on 3 years sober (in July), has a happy family life with 1 son and a daughter on the way.

Anyways, I think their material, in just 5 albums, rivals anyone. Is there a less famous band who averages quadruple platinum every time out? No one seems to know who they are! Or if they do, they don't know all of the material. People will say they don't like them, then hear a song from them and I'll tell them who it is and they'll say, "No way, I like this song, always have!" Then another song, and another, till they realize they actually do like them, they just didn't know they had done all of those songs. Like I said, they are the least famous famous band around. For those of you who may not know their body of work........

    Wicked Garden

    From 'Purple'

    From 'Tiny Music...'
    Big Bang Baby

    From 'No. 4'
    Down
    Heaven and Hotrods
    Sour Girl
    No Way Out

    From 'Shangri-la Dee Da'

    Hollywood Bitch

    From 'FAmily Values Tour 2001'

So..........agree, disagree? What are you guys' thoughts?

They lost me after Purple, but I think their first two albums are outstanding. I'd say they're one of the best bands of the 90's and along with Pearl Jam they're the only band from that era to still be around.

Top-notch. Shangri La Dee Da was a great return to form for them. Definitely one of the top 5 rock acts of the last ten years!

That's a band that I consistently like 3 or 4 songs off of each release they have. I thought they started off kind of as a Pearl Jam ripoff, but now they're pretty original and still have good songs here and there. "Sour Girl" is my fav.

I have Core. It's a very cool cd! I've heard Purple and its pretty damn good as well, but I also heard Shang ra li la di da or whatever and it was less than impressive imo.

I like some STP. Core is a great album and Purple isn't bad either. Vatican is pretty weak and No.4 was more of a return back to the old sound of STP.

I lost them after Purple too. They just decided to go the "jangly" guitar route. I've bought Vatican and 4 and I downloaded Shangri La Dee Da with the intent of buying it if I liked it more than the last two. I didn't.

But the 1st two albums are phenomenal.

ETRIGAN pretty much said what I'm thinking. Vatican seemed boring and not has heavy as the first two albums, and the stuff I've heard from 4 and Shangri-La Dee Da aren't very impressive IMO.
