Taking an idea from the DLRARMY a few steps further, I have downloaded the original versions of all the songs from Crazy From The Heat via Napster (Shhhh...don't tell Lar$):

Edgar Winter Group - "Easy Street"
Louis Prima - "Just A Gigolo"
    Beach Boys - "California Girls"
    Lovin' Spoonful - "Coconut Grove"

Interesting to see how true Dave was to the originals!

    ------------------
"Ain't much distance 'tween a pat on the back
And a kick in the pants..."

"M-TV Get off the air...now!" - Jello Biafra

Just A Gigolo isn't an original?

Okay Billy, you've inspired me. I've decided to throw a CD together with all the original versions of songs that appeared on VH studio albums and DLR solo albums. I've got them all (I think) except "I'm Easy". Anybody know who did that song originally?

That's a pretty cool idea! The only other performer listed for "Baby, I'm Easy" was Billy Field (who cowrote the song with Tom Price) himself, but I can find no information on Field or his recordings. Who do you have for "Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now)"? Was there a "You're No Good" before Ronstadt? Be kind of the reverse of the Bruce Springsteen "Cover Me" CD they had awhile back!

It's really cool and sounds pretty old, though I don't know if it's the original version.

You're No Good was originally done by Betty Everett in 1963, and I found it on Napster. If it fits I'm also going to put the Ronstadt version on there.

I have three versions of Night Life by Willie Nelson. The first is a long (9 min) medley which I believe is the original, though I'm not 100% sure. Then there's a live version and a version with BB King, which I assume is much newer.

Thanks for the I'm Easy info, any corrections for me, feel free.

Through careful study (AKA wasting time) I just found out that that 9 minute Willie Nelson medley isn't the original That's Life, but I did find and download what I believe to be the original.

In case anyone cares, or wants to help by correcting me, here's what I've got

    You Really Got Me-Kinks
    Ice Cream Man-John Brim
    You're No Good-Betty Everett
    Where Have All TGTG-Kinks
    Pretty Woman-Roy Orbison
Dancing In the Streets-Martha and the Vandellas
    Big Bad Bill-Leon Redbone
Happy Trails-Roy Rogers (from 1943 it says)
    A Apolitical Blues-Little Feat
    Easy Street-Edgar Winter
    Coconut Grove-Lovin Spoonful
    California Girls-Beach Boys
    Just A Gigolo/Ain't Got-Louis Prima
    Shy Boy-Talas
    I'm Easy-HELP
    Tobacco Road-Nashville Teens
    That's Life-Frank Sinatra
    Night Life-Willie Nelson

Anything incorrect or missing, feel free to set me on the right path.

Well, a little research of my own takes me back to at least 1924 with Dolly Kay doing "Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now)", also done by Emmett Miller around the same time and a female singer that all I know is her last name started with either S, T, U, W or Y! Don't know which was first, however.

I tried both of those names on Napster and got a big blank with each. At the very least it would be interesting to know which version Van Halen was aware of. I sent Loonszilla an email so he could check this out. He's the blues deacon, so I put my faith in him.

Well, I downloaded the Emmett Miller version - I don't imagine finding the Dolly Kay one since the only mention I found of it was on a 78!

Thanks to Billy007 for sending that Emmett Miller tune my way. I'm getting close to getting all these tunes together.

Damn, this is one cool mutha of a thread.

I wonder who Dave heard doin' Big Bad Bill on the radio(isn't that how he discovered it?). I know that Ry Cooder did a fine rendition of it(from a WB release).

I'm Easy--dunno fellas, but I know that I've seen some cat coverin' it and it made me think that Dave probably heard this version and decided to make it his own. Maybe twas Boz Scaggs.

I bet that cd is smokin',though. All this jivin' reminds me of The Roots of Robert Johnson and the Roots of John Lee Hooker and The Roots of the blues. These a here cds include original versions of tunes and tunes that other artists copped and made their own. Like "Rollin' and Tumblin'" by Hambone Willie Newbern is the basis for Robert Johnson's "Travelling Riverside blues" and "Last Fair Deal Gone Down."
