What do you guys think of Crossroads the movie? I think it is awesome! I have watched the guitar duel with Steve Vai and Ry Cooder a hundred times at least! Vai is really cool and evil looking in that movie. He also has a wicked solo, I think he won the duel.

I chatted with David Coverdale on the net before and he told me that he first saw and heard Steve Vai in Crossroads and was BLOWN AWAY!

Was Steve Vai in DLR's band yet when he was filming Crossroads?

I have a 'thing' for Jami Gertz. The movie itself is cool, but Jami made it special .

Was this chat before or after Coverdale joined VH?

The movie was done in '86 I think, so I would think that he WAS in Dave's band at the time.

I thought the movie was kinda neat. I don't know how many hours I dedicated to learning Steve's part of the duel, he's a great great player.

I loved this movie for a lot reasons.

First of all, Macchio was believable as a schmuck who learns to play the blues. (Big stretch, huh? - LOL )

I'm a big fan of the whole delta blues "mystique" if you will - lots of soul in that kind of playing.

I'm also a HUGE Ry Cooder fan, and love his multifaceted playing - his work on the soundtrack is phenomenally raw and emotional. "Feeling Bad Blues" gets a lot of play in my CD deck.

Speaking of the soundtrack, it's one for any guitar player's collection (despite the fact that the "duel" is NOT on it - ggrrrrrrr ), as well as music fans in general.

I need to make a point of putting the movie on my "to buy and own" list.

I really enjoyed the movie. At first glance i though it was a Clapton based movie (crossroads, duh), but then discovered that Vai was in it and jumped at it. Clapton woulda been awsome too, but oh well. Pissed me off that RALPH MACCHIO won the duel. WTF
WHOAOH! Hey you! Who said that? Baby how you been?

I ain't quite sure if Vai was with Dave when the movie was made--I think the movie was shot just before Vai hooked up with DLR. No past interview sheds any light on this?

It's too bad the duel wasn't included in the soundtrack, so I just taped it onto cassette.

Casting Vai in that role was perfect, for a change, not so much for the music, but he just looked like the devil's guitarist

If you wanna listen to Vai's part by itself in audio without the movie just go to Morpheus or some other mp3 interface and type in "Eugene's Trick Bag" - that's the name of the piece he plays.

He's supposed to include his Crossroads performance whenever he gets around to releasing a box set.
