    Hendrix Voted Greatest Guitarist
Tue Aug 6, 1:59 PM ET

LONDON (Reuters) - Rock icon Jimi Hendrix has been voted the greatest guitarist of all time in a poll by a leading European guitar magazine Tuesday.

The legendary American rocker, famed for his searing performances on his trademark Fender Stratocaster, blew away the competition in the survey published in Total Guitar magazine's 100th issue Tuesday.

Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page trailed Hendrix in second place, while Eric "Slowhand" Clapton earned a third place spot.

More than 400 guitarists were nominated in the survey of nearly 800 readers and celebrities who were asked to list their five favorite choices by post or e-mail. The magazine published the top 100 selections.

Predictably, most of the chart toppers hailed from rock's giant bands of the 1960s and 1970s.

"These guys may not be 'cool' by any music critic's viewpoint, but they are genuinely the fastest, loudest, most exciting players in rock-and roll," editor Scott Rowley said in a statement.

Other top 10 big guns were Queen's Brian May at No. 5 and Pink Floyd's David Gilmour in eighth place, both of whom were beaten by Slash from Guns N' Roses, who ranked fourth.

Among younger guitarists, Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine was ranked 13th, followed in 14th place by the late Kurt Cobain from 1990s grunge godfathers Nirvana.

Not one female guitarist was ranked among the top 100, with only one woman -- Tracy Chapman -- nominated among 440 names.

Rowley noted the list included a substantial number of nu-metal players, to whom he attributed the renewed interest in guitar playing.

"These are some of the loudest and fastest players in the world. They eat indie bands for breakfast. It's like grunge and Britpop never happened," he said.
"There's a Japanese term called wabi-sabi, not wasabi, but wabi-sabi. It means an appreciation for the imperfect, the less than precision. The cowboy boots that you never polish because it's bad luck. That is completely wabi-sabi. Van Halen is that." - DLR 2002<br /><br />"Look! I can see their parachutes! They're ok..." - Tenshinhan, DragonBall Z

The poll was conducted by a British and European guitar publication. I was insulted by the list and called the editor, Scott Rowley, out on it regarding Eddie. He informed me that the publication is not known in the states as a "player" in the guitar publication world here and that the average reader of their publication was no older than 24 years old. That Van Halen was not popular at any time in England. That tells me that if your dead or British, you charted in the top 20. This is boloney! Guitar World and Guitar Player have hundreds of thousands more readers and their polls looked drastically different. Jimi was not #1 in both of them, Slash, Satch, May and Wylde were not even in the top 10 here, and Randy Rhoads and Stevie Ray Vaughan were given their due respect in our publications. I am just grateful that Total Guitar is not indicative to the true history of the instrument. If Cobain and Slash are ahead of Rhoads and Ray Vaughan, then something must be seriously wrong!

"I don't even want to know where Eddie finished."

Just so you know, he was seventh. I don't read Total Guitar but the Top 10 was reported in the newspaper I read. What pisses me off is that charts like this, at least in this country, are based on a band's popularity as opposed to actual influence; hence, Brian May's position in the chart.

As for Eddie, though, the band's inactivity in Europe for 9 years between 1984 and 1993 has to play a part in why they're not popular, in fact not KNOWN largely, over here.
Use my hand, I won't look!
