I like Vai a lot better than Satriani!

They are both great though, they just have different styles. And Vai's style appeals to me a lot more.
You can't really say that one is better than the other, it's only a opinion.

I do think that Eddie is better than Vai though technically also EdwardVanHalen.

vai is the man !!!!! my second fav guitarist....technically im gonna go with vai over eddie..but eddies riffs and solo compisitions are more kick ass...personally i like the sex and religion cd but you either love it or hate it...i like all of vai s stuff, i think some people ecspect to hear an eddie substitute when they buy a vai cd and its just not the case...maybe thats why there are so many people who only like one of his cd s.....vai was zappas guitrist before dave so he s going to be influenced by that, his stuff is avante gard ,which i like personally....

Guys, I'm not just saying this because it is a Van Halen board . . .but Vai is not half of Eddie in any area. Considering Eddie's influence and innovation to technique, sound and speed, I don't think it is fair to compare any guitar player after 1978 to him.

With that said, I also love Vai and think he is one of the best in the world. I have often stated, with majority support, that his albums were worse and worse as he went on. Any smart record label would have droipped him after his last two realeases. They were terrible and damaged his reputation as a writer and composer.

I do think Vai is better then his teacher, Satch, but it is fair to say that both of them are very Eddie-esque in their sound, double hand tapping, and technique.

SV has no rythm in his playing? It's all lead it seems and tends to get real boring quik for me. It's like one big solo, granted he has the gift but in my book he's at the low totem pole of guitarists in my eyes.

I can't believe that you guys like vai over satch, vai has never done anything even close to the greatness of satch's "Surfing With The Aliens" (the greatest instrumental album of all time)

For Edward Van Halen (topic poster): It is great to hear you like Vai's music!! Sex and Religion is a very "VAI" album...the singer is tremendously aggressive...listen to "pigs"..a couple of great instrumentals too! The songs are heavy in nature...compared to the "singing songs" on Ultra Zone.
As for the other guys posting and comparing everyone like Satch, Vai and Eddie: These 3 guitar players are the best at what they do and have done. People are still in the habit of comparing Vai to Eddie because Vai was DLR's first "solo" guitar player. Vai was/is still compared to Satch because of the lessons. Eddie is the innovator (trail maker) and Satch was a great instrumental guitar player at the right time...Surfing is still one of the greatest instrumental guitar albums of ALL time. Vai's music is probably the most "personal" guitar music ever. He captures his emotions, dreams, nightmares etc..and puts them on guitar. Vai and Satch are very grateful they had/have Eddie leading the way. BUT: lets not "rip" on any of these guys because they have all gone to what they feel is the best music avenue they have to offer.
Ohh and by the way: Vai does have rhythm!! Just listen to Erotic Nightmares.
Steve is also a very nice guy in person too.
    I could go on forever...sorry

As far as music labels dropping Vai if they were smart: Vai now has his own music label so you will not have to worry about Vai's music getting dropped!!! LOL

Eyes of the Night: Instrumental guitar music is often mistaken as having "no rhythm". Well, listen to Baluchitherium...Awesome instrumental!!!! Right? ......
I hope this doesn't make you think Eddie has no rhythm in this song!!
Baluch has a "feel" of Hordes of Locust a la Satch....kind of like how Satch had the feel of La Grange (ZZ top). That does not mean that anyone was ripping anyone off...just jamming out and having a good old time playing the greatest instrument in the world!! THE GUITAR!!!

Really GS, I didn't know that or yah I forgot that. You see hear's the thing, that's not my cup of tea, so in saying that as a guitarist I could say he does not have rythm. Just an example would be "yankee rose" great tune I love n' all but the ryhtm work lagged. All in all though, that's what he does best you could say as an artist which is an intrumentalist.
