I was thinking the other day... we're sitting on a major technological shift in sound reproduction and frankly there's not much buzz about it.

For a period of time all there was, was mono. Then stereo kicked in and things were good. Quad had a brief life in the late 70's & early 80's then died quietly although it was pretty cool.... shift forward 20 years...

Now there a good possibility that 5.1 or 6.1 sound reproduction is nearing commercial possibility. For movie theater sound I think it's pretty much in it's infancy and getting better.

For music recording I was thinking of the possibilities which has me pretty excited!!! Think about the infinate possibilities in doing 6 or 7 distinct channels within a final mix -vs- today's standard 2. Recording technology has to make a hop to get us there but can you imagine the literal wall of sound and head spinning effects you could get...??

Sounds good, but I'm not ready to replace my stereo or CD collection yet!

I like music to sound like the band is right there.......playing in front of me......

    If it's a movie......surround sounds pretty cool........
Actually I think most of us are Dave, Sam, and Mike fans. There's just a small group of people who have strange allegiances and like to get into petty pissing contests that I can't believe everyone on this site isn't bored of. - Brett

you may have to check into recording software that's used for video work. i'm not sure if Pro Tools, etc does 5.1 and higher. and for the home recordist, that shit's gotta be pricey...not to mention, the existing base of non-surround sound equipment is immense. hell, i've still got one of those old quad receivers from the 70's, and it works fine in stereo, and i can't be the only one with old gear lying around. yeah, they can make VHS cassettes that work in regular stereo, or in 5.1 or whatever, but it may be a stretch to make audio do both.
