Well, I said I'd be starting some topics to generate discussion.

    So here's # 1. LOL.

A couple of months ago I got the 2CD set of the legendary concert Cheap Trick performed back in 1978.

I had never really listened to any of their music before but was always vaguely interested in checking them out.

I had heard of this concert and went looking for the original version, but the original was missing some songs from the performance because the record company thought the Japanese audience would like the "pop" songs better than the "harder" songs.

The edited version is the famous one. But after having listened to only the complete and uncut concert, I could care less about it.

    This thing kicks ass.

    DISC 1

The first thing you hear is the band backstage shuffling around as they make their way out to the stage. The MC announces them and they rip into "Hello There."

"Come On, Come On" - Great singing, you'll be singing along to the chourus.

"Elo Kiddies" is a great song. A cool and punkish vibe - especially from Robin Zander, the lead singer.

"Speak Now Or Forever Hold Your Peace" - Heavy, but melodic. Cool.

"Big Eyes" - Just a kick ass song, great heavy riff.

"Lookout" - Great pop song with heavy tendencies.

"Downed" - Hard rocking, great rythyms giving way to cool harmonies.

"Can't Hold On" - Blues-rock, a little like "Little Dreamer" but heavier (and longer. LOL. 6:13)

"Oh Caroline" - It'll get you in with the chicks.Good rocker with an "obsessive" edge.

"Surrender" - All time classic. Nuff said. (You are SERIOUSLY fucking emotionally crippled if you don't get chills from the chorus at the end.)

"Auf Wiedersehen" - One of the lyrics is my tag. Again, nuff said. Thick rythym section on this one.

    DISC 2

"Need Your Love" - Pimp-Out Smoothness. You'll see.

"High Roller" - I think this song is ABOUT a pimp. LOL. Kicks ass. Great harmonies.

"Southern Girls" - A VH song, ("Classic VH," mind you) if ever there was one. I could easily see this being on VH II.

"I Want You To Want Me" - Another all time classic. This is the one that made them famous. (Interesting backstory about this song in the liner notes. )

"California Man" - Could be another VH song. Great Dave-like vibe.

"Goodnight" - It's the same as "Hello There" only the lyrics are different, you know? Hello? Goodbye? You'll see.

"Ain't That A Shame" - A great cover of the Fats Domino classic.

"Clock Strikes Ten" Balls to the wall, man. Great opening riff.

Now, as an added bonus, if you put either disc in your CD drive on your computer, you can watch a video of "Surrender" on disc 1, and "Auf Wiedersehen" on disc 2.

For whatever my opinion is worth to you peeps, I really do recommend you picking this up.

I can't imagine anyone NOT digging the hell out of this.

Well, close! ""High Roller" was Robin's idea, a wry song about a would-be bigshot drug runner from Lake Geneva, Wisconsin..." - Sex America Cheap Trick

Yeah, after having At Budokan for many, many years (and being worn out on it one summer at the amusement park I worked at where they played an 8 track of it over and over) and then getting Budokan II in the mid-90s, it was great to get the whole package resequenced and buffed up on The Complete Concert.

Well, I was close enough on the "pimp" theory of "High Roller."

In the chorus of, "I Want You To Want Me" you can actually hear the Japanese fans chanting "Cryin', cryin', cryin'."

    Zander said it was deafening.

Yeah, a video would be great.

I bet they're holding out on releasing it until the 30th anniversary.

The two videos for "Surrender" and "Auf Wiedersehen" are cool.

I used to have this album as well, played it over and over. I'll have to pick up this CD.
especially after hearing DIF's remarks, brings back lots of memories.

    Cool, diamondsgirl.

Anyone have other recommendations about Cheap Trick albums?

And it just hit me, the ONLY thing I have in common with Billy Corgan is that I like both VH and Cheap Trick.

    (I think that's a good thing. )

Well, the first three albums are pretty cool - Heaven Tonight is probably my favourite - "Surrender", "California Man", "High Roller" and "Auf Weidersehen" from The Complete Concert can be found there. In Color was their second album - a little poppy (and a little short) but 8 of the ten songs are on The Complete Concert. Cheap Trick (there are two albums by that name - both good) was their first album - "Elo Kiddies", and "Speak Now..." are the only two tracks on The Complete Concert. It's a pretty raw album, but it has some great songs. I like Dream Police, too, but after that things started to get uneven. Lap Of Luxury was good as well.

    "Heaven Tonight" is great.

I got the re-mastered version, it has a couple of out-takes of "Surrender" and "Stiff Competition" (the latter is HYSTERICAL at the end )

It's the only other Cheap Trick album I have, but both "Heaven Tonight" and "The Complete Concert" make me want to get the other titles you mentioned, billy.

The song "Heaven Tonight" is one of the creepiest songs I've ever heard. I can only listen to it when I'm in a mood, you know?

I really dig "On Top Of The World" and "You're Takin' Me Back" (that song puts me into a trance. )

They're a great band, I wonder why you never hear them getting any respect.

If Budokan was the only album Cheap Trick ever made, it would have been good enough. They were a fucking great band at this time before they started writing crappy ballads like "the flame".

Ed6150, Cheap Trick is no VH.

(I mean that it isn't for everybody. LOL. )

I'm only starting to get into them, myself, so

FORD, I remember "The Flame" now that you mention it. And "Don't Be Cruel." Neither of them move me, but I guess that they were on the slide when that song came out.

What was that, 1988, or something? Anybody know?

Yes, "The Flame" (from Lap of Luxury) came out in 1988. In fact, for those of you that think Van Halen have it bad with Warner Brothers - it could be worse. I saw on one thread where people were hoping they would go to a good label "like Sony". Well, Sony runs Epic, which was Cheap Trick's label in 1988, and they forced "The Flame" on the band. It wasn't the first time they did such a thing, either - just the first time it was successful.

    Thanks for the info, billy.

You know, I don't remember much of the video for, "The Flame" but I kind of recall not seeing any of the guys in the band smile. LOL.

Take THAT for what it's worth.

Although WB can really screw VH over (in terms of contract disputes, and promotional dereliction) VH could do worse than to have WB as their label.
